A great way to celebrate community health workers is to ensure they have reliable and affordable mobility to reach those they serve. In many parts of the world, CHWs must walk hours per day to reach patients, reducing efficiency and effectiveness. To accelerate health systems strengthening in a sustainable manner, CHWs need mobility support. Bicycles are part of that solution. Our data shows CHWs with bicycles reach up to 88% more patients than CHWs without bicycles, and their retention rate rises up to 95%. We call on governments to integrate mobility into CHW policies and programs. https://lnkd.in/dy7ME5-t

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Administration for Community Living (ACL), has unveiled a robust series of initiatives aimed at addressing the critical and longstanding shortage of direct care professionals. This workforce, the backbone of support for older adults and people with disabilities, is crucial for enabling millions to live with dignity in their communities rather than in institutional settings. The new measures, part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s broader efforts to bolster the nation’s caregiving infrastructure, promise a significant step forward in ensuring accessible, quality care for some of society’s most vulnerable. The annual #HousingCentral conference is happening November 20 – 22, 2023, and the #BCSPCA is proud to be a presenter and tradeshow exhibitor. On Monday afternoon, Meghann Cant and Iris Ting will be leading an interactive session: Partnering to Address the Challenges of Pet-Friendly Housing, and Sarah Herring will be hosting our tradeshow booth on Monday and Tuesday. Research is clear that the human-animal bond enhances our physical and mental well-being. Pets can help alleviate stress, reduce loneliness, relieve depression, and facilitate healing and resiliency. Evidence also shows that people see their pets as family members and often make difficult decisions, including staying in unsafe housing or turning down temporary shelter or permanent housing, to keep their family together. However, co-housing people and their pets is not without challenges. Join partner organizations BC Housing and the BC SPCA for a panel discussion of a unique pilot project to address these issues and support more widespread adoption of pet-friendly housing. Learn more about the BC SPCA’s pet-friendly housing work at: https://lnkd.in/d5s-wn_a and register for #HousingCentral at: https://lnkd.in/epH3-nx.

🌟 National Community Health Worker Awareness Week! 🌟 This week is dedicated to honoring the incredible contributions of Community Health Workers (CHWs) who tirelessly serve and uplift communities across America. NCHWAW is an opportunity to increase awareness and understanding of CHWs, core roles and unique identities, and our contributions to community health and wellbeing. The American Public Health Association (APHA) defines CHWs as frontline public health workers who have a close understanding and trust within the community they serve. This trust allows them to bridge the gap between health/social services and the community, enhancing access to services and the quality of service delivery while respecting cultural competence. CHWs engage in various activities like outreach, community education, counseling, social support, and advocacy to increase health knowledge and self-sufficiency. Despite their advocacy over the years, the identities and capacities of CHWs, including CHRs and promotoras, are not fully comprehended in the U.S. This leads to strategies, policies, and programs that often fail to partner with them authentically. The National Association of Community Health Workers (NACHW) has collaborated with CHWs, CHW Networks, and allies to establish the Six Pillars of Community Health Workers. These pillars aim to clearly define who CHWs are, their locations, their roles, and their capabilities, fostering understanding and recognition. There are several ways employers and policymakers can continue to support Community Health Workers: 💲 Pay CHWs thriving wages that include competitive, fair market pay scales, comprehensive benefits, paid time off, access to self-care support, and overtime and sick pay. 📚 Ensure CHWs have access to professional development and career advancement or promotion opportunities. 🏛 Pass state legislation recognizing and protecting CHWs' authenticity as a profession with lived experience and unique core roles and competencies. ✅ Appropriate funding to CHW-led networks and associations to lead and sustain CHW workforce development at local, state, and regional levels, Thank you, Community Health Workers, for your boundless energy, compassion, and the countless lives you touch. Your efforts remind us that health is not just a medical issue but a community endeavor. Together, we can build healthier, happier futures for everyone! #CHWWeek #CommunityHealth #HealthEquity #HealthcareHeroes #MakingADifference #CHWS #Promotoras #CaliforniaHealthcare #HealthcareLaw #CaliforniaHealthcare
