In the final quarter of 2023, Mike Skeggs and I soft-launched The Collaborative Network CIC. As we gear up for our official launch in April, we wanted to share some information about our services. We are a subscription-based community support network and sign-posting service that connects businesses, business leaders and employees together with other professional services to allow an LGBTQ+ focused approach regarding LGBTQ+ matters which arise in the workplace. Our mission is to create a community movement that fosters inclusivity and diversity in the workplace. Have you ever heard of "rainbow washing"? Rainbow washing is when brands and organizations make a show of discussing LGBTQ+-related topics, usually only during Pride Month, and without making meaningful change in their workplaces to actually support the LGBTQ+ community. It's performative, not real allyship. So how can we make sure we aren't rainbow washing our workplaces? First, we should focus LGBTQ+ issues all year long, not just during Pride Month. Second, we must keep in mind that the LGBTQ+ community is very diverse, which means the types of issues and types of support they might require are also diverse. Finally, and most importantly, we must get feedback from members of the LGBTQ+ community in our workplaces on what support they are lacking, and then make actual change. This includes changes to recruiting and hiring, as well as the actual work environment. And we must get continual feedback from them to make sure that they are included in our workplaces. Although there is always an opportunity to be reminded of the diversity we are surrounded by, Pride Month is a time to pay special attention to the experiences of the LGBTQ+ community and highlight the importance of fostering an inclusive environment in the workplace. I've been pleased to hear testimonials from colleagues at Teva Pharmaceuticals, sharing that they feel they can be themselves and are supported by their peers. It was brave of them to step up and publicly talk about their experience with other employees. Unfortunately, we know this isn’t always possible everywhere. In order to build a more supportive environment, we can start by challenging our own biases and considering different perspectives. These tips for building meaningful connections with co-workers are especially useful when it comes to understanding diversity.
