On July 4th we celebrate the courage of those men and women who embraced the idea of freedom and indepedence and sacrificed much to earn it. It took over seven years from the time the Declaration of Independence was signed until the day the British surrendered, but those in the halls of Congress, and those who rallied behind such a powerful ideal didn't know how long the task would last. Today we are honored and inspired by those same "self- evident" truths to continue building a more perfect Union, no matter how long the task will take. I honor, appreciate and lift up those of us that stay vigilant by creating ways to share our stories, our history, our culture and future. Through our Art and Creativity we are artists building new worlds, new pathways, new infrastructures, writing new songs, writing new books, new theatre productions, new curriculum, new schools, to tell and teach the old and new stories. PATH TO HONOR encourages self-exploration of the six values embodied in the Medal of Honor: courage, commitment, integrity, sacrifice, citizenship, and patriotism. Students select a module focusing on one of the core values and trace the steps of Medal of Honor Recipients. As they hear stories in the Recipients’ own words, students decide what they would do in that moment, then hear the rest of the story and reflect on the values demonstrated, making real-life connections to character values.
