#GreenNudge: In-store cues & nudges promote sustainable product choices Today's green nudge example comes from Sille Krukow at Krukow. As a leading Nudge and Behavior Design consultancy, Krukow is dedicated to measurable change. They create tailored strategies using design thinking, psychology, and nudging to make the right decisions easy in areas such as sales, performance, circularity, sustainability, and safety. 👉 What unsustainable behaviour needs to change: On average, a single grocery store emits CO2 equivalents of 635 passenger cars annually. With over 60,000 supermarkets in the United States alone, the retail market plays a significant role in reducing global emissions. To mitigate this impact, it's imperative to steer shoppers towards more climate-friendly choices. People are creatures of habit and tend to stick with familiar routines, like walking the same aisles in the supermarket, or grabbing the usual products, regardless if they’re environmentally friendly or not. This habitual behaviour makes it challenging to adopt sustainable shopping practices, as individuals may resist change, or see eco-friendly alternatives as inconvenient. To break these routines, adding some friction can help people to stop, think, and reconsider their choices. 👉 The Green Nudge: As one of the biggest Nordic retailers, Coop launched a climate lab in 2022 called 'Klima Kvickly' in Aarhus, Denmark. This store serves as a testing ground for how a climate-neutral supermarket can operate. Here they tested 93 in-store nudges to guide customers toward climate-friendly grocery shopping. The store features numerous climate-related information: such as seasonality for fruits and vegetables, the climate impact of product transport, cultivation, and preparation, and which meats have higher environmental impacts. By creating a unified visual language with vibrant cues and subtle nudges, they made customers attentive to this communication, disrupted shopping routines, sparked curiosity in sustainable products; resulting in more environmentally conscious choices. The result: This innovative climate-store approach effectively directed shoppers toward eco-friendly choices, encouraging "more greens and less red meat." Additionally, sales within the entire fruits and vegetable category increased by 69%, and customer perception of climate-friendly choices soared from 7% to 65%. Coop reduced CO2 emissions by 14%, achieving their 2030 climate goals in just six months. Apart from the climate-related benefits, the introduction of the green interventions resulted in a 123% revenue increase, making the test store the best performing Coop supermarket in Denmark. This underscores how climate-friendly practices, when implemented right, can enhance profitability and demonstrate that sustainability is a viable business strategy. Passionate about Sustainable Packaging, design and communication | Be the change that you wish to see in the world
This marks a significant milestone for reusability. I believe one of the primary paths towards achieving a circular economy is by gaining the trust of major brand owners in embracing the evolution and transition towards this economic model. European counterparts have policies that are ahead in many ways which is why I see this as the crucial step North America needs to take. Transitioning the brands that Americans trust towards sustainability is imperative. (They go through 6 BILLION cups a year.) #sustainability #reuse #branding #circulareconomy #circularity

#rant 😡 My first world problem #1: When the sustainability forgets the customer experience. When picking up a laptop from an unnamed store in Sydney, I was left bewildered when they didn't have a bag for me to put it in. 🛍 Now before you start, yes maybe I should've taken my own bag, to lead by example and be sustainable over being naive and dependent on a store to provide me with the convenience to carry the $$$$ item purchased from them. But I didn't, and I await my penance. 👿 So instead I had to carry it around town. 🏙 Now I'm not ranting about having to carry something (and I don't mind paying for a bag either), but it's not exactly the easiest shape to carry, nor light. 🏋♂️ I mainly wasn't overly comfortable carrying an obvious laptop box in the open that could easily be snatched out of my hand in a major city. 🚓 So how did we end up here? My assumption is this decision must've been made by the same people who decided how big the compost bags are for my food recycle bin. I imagine it went like this...... 👨💻 Committee Member 1: "Do you think these fit in the recycle bin and won't easily break and spill people's food everywhere when they take them out?" 👩💻 Committee Member 2: "It meets our budget and targets and gives us the impression we care about the environment, it's good for our brand." 👩💻 Chair: " 🤷♀️ let's move onto item 2." I'm all for sustainability, re-use, recycling, but maybe let's not forget the basics. Like say, I don't know, something crazy - can someone safely carry the items I sell in my store, out of my store. #firstworldproblem #paperbag

3wI am literally enjoying a Slurpee as I read this. You are right, it doesn't have to come in a plastic cup - a paper one would be fine - the cup not the straw. On the other hand, electric cars are not ready for prime time and solar panels on the roof aren't going power even the cash registers, let alone the walk ins. - not to mention that they aren't reliable.
