Companies need to start prioritising portfolios when it comes to hiring creatives (photographer , social media manager, marketer, graphic designer etc) A portfolio will tell you everything about a creative and not their CV! Yes a CV will tell you their level of education and where they’ve worked, but it will never tell you how creative they can be, what results they produce and the quality of their work.

They also should not be something you require your social media manager to do (in general[1]). I get that you’re a startup and need the person to take on extra work, but that should be a ‘We’re currently a startup and you’ll need to do some extra work. We’ll be hiring a graphic designer/photographer/whatever to assume that work as we grow.’ [1] I’m willing to make exceptions. I’m fine loading a graphic up and slapping a branding layer on it or cropping it. Resizing it if it’s too big of a file. Capturing rough, live event type photos. Basically those things that are either easy or expected to be rough.

If you hire a graphic designer to do the creation of material, video editing, videography, SEO, motion graphics, or social media management, you are hiring an entire digital marketing team. or, if you want it all, at least pay for it. I saw numerous advertisements like "need a graphic designer who knows video editing this or that..." but after salary confirmation, I was startled to learn that the companies were not even paying a wage comparable to that of a graphic designer!
