Today (August 9) is International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. Aunty Debra Bennet, Lead Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Engagement and Cultural Advisor at RAQ, shares a statement: International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples was created by the United Nations and is observed on the ninth of August every year. This year’s theme is Indigenous Youth as Agents of Change for Self-determination. We – First Nations Elders and adults – all over the world honour the next generation of young peoples, our youth leaders, as the future of our communities. It is both a privilege and a responsibility to nurture their individual and collective gifts. Indigenous youth are like precious seeds. We sow them into the future of our lands here in Australia and globally. Right now, our youth are experiencing very real struggles due to negative portrayals in the media. As the public debate on The Voice to Parliament becomes more toxic, experts are concerned about the impact that will be faced by young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. The rise in racial hostility is likely to heavily affect the younger generations. ‘The prevalence of misinformation actually just inflames the situation and creates conflict and controversy,’ - Professor Helen Milroy, Palyku woman, Fellow of the Rural Australian New Zealand College of Psychiatrics. This is why we must reach out to young people. We want to help them to live their dreams. To rise above the obstacles. To be passionate about living a positive life. To keep our culture strong. Empowering our youth will lead to a better future for our families, the community, Australia, and the world. There are many opportunities to mentor our youth. We can encourage First Nations youth to participate in the Queensland Indigenous Youth Leadership Program. I believe the future is in good hands. We honor the sovereignty and resilience of Indigenous Peoples across the Americas. Let us acknowledge the significance of this day while dually reevaluating the flawed legacy of Columbus Day, as the history of colonization has lead to the incomprehensible loss of lives, culture, and land. We invite you to further educate yourself on leaders in this space. Seventh Generation Fund for Indigenous Peoples is a great place to start. Throughout their efforts, they follow these 6 core tenets: 1. Recognizing that Indigenous Peoples, communities, and nations understand their issues and are best suited to design solutions and programs that remedy their concerns. 2. Advancing the unique wisdom, knowledge, cultures, and practices that shape and inform the vitality of future generations, supporting Mother Earth’s abilities to nurture and sustain life. 3. Mobilizing resources through strategic placement of program-related support with grants, technical assistance, and organizational capacity building to increase assets, knowledge, and skills. 4. Engaging civil society, the philanthropic arena, and pertinent partners to advance Native issues, strategies, and perspectives. 5. Seeing youth programs like this warms my heart. First Nations kids growing up connected to culture, choosing their own path and connecting with each other is something we need to see more of, and is building a pipeline of deadly future leaders. It's passing on important cultural knowledge and spirituality, and contributing towards healing. I'm reassured to see an increase in programs which are run by mob and focused on rebuilding wellbeing, strengthening self-esteem, supporting a strong sense of agency and fostering pride in identity. For every program empowering mob, be it focused on youth, adults or Elders, we move further in our cultural revitalisation and strengthening journey, ensuring preservation and enduring practice of culture and all that entails. Australia will have better outcomes when First Nations people are empowered and have strong representation in leadership positions and decision making bodies. When we as a nation, embed respecting and valuing First Nations peoples, cultures and knowledge, our country as a whole will thrive, supported enduringly by our people's long-standing and profound connections each other, all living things and Country. https://lnkd.in/gXv9HeH7

Every year, "International Day of the World’s Indigenous People" is observed on August 9 to raise awareness and preserve their needs. On this World Day of Indigenous People, let's celebrate the rich cultures and traditions of Indigenous communities around the world. Dnet celebrates the power and potential of Indigenous youth as agents of change for self-determination. To align with this, this year's theme, "Indigenous Youth as Agents of Change for Self-Determination," is an important reminder that young people have a critical role to play in shaping the future of Indigenous communities and in promoting social justice. We must prioritize the voices and experiences of Indigenous people in all of our work. As we celebrate the resilience and diversity of Indigenous people, let's also commit to breaking down barriers to communication and understanding and promoting equity and inclusion for all communities. Together, we can build a more just and equitable world for all.

Consider (watch Video) joy in the small and big wins and learn through an educational reflection what progress has been made, and what you can do to #BetheChange you/we wish to see in the world. "The opposition is constant and persistent and is exhausting. We know #Colonization causes and caused #ClimateChange. People in "movement systems" are healing from trauma; social, political and economic oppression. Oppression is stored in our bodies, and so is our joy. Healing keeps us going; this very difficult work and progress we deserve and from a place of joy. Don't minimize the steps and progress we've made. It minimizes the trust in our own work as community builders and people for progress and peace." ***Three things suggested to strengthen work as a human trying to 'do good' in this collapsing #ClimateCrisis: (1) Work with organizers to design new strategic tactics for resistance against colonialism at work in capitalistic society where criminalizing for protesting is real. New tactics are needed with new tools to prove what we already know is true to drive policy. (2) Train up movements in alignment in 'how' we advocate; an act as activist. Example of sovereignty is a right to govern, though self-determination is about self identification with choice to choose political status and economic development. For example, "Indigenous people are not stakeholders, we are right holders.... and deserve to be recognized as such." (3) Devote yourself. Its about deep love and is more than solidarity. Show our planet, our sacred mother Earth. For example, give up air travel and move yourself into "localizing." Be more devoted to your place and your ecosystem and your community right where you are. We keep blaming corporate as an excuse to not change our behaviors - if we keep using and consuming energy and goods through the #FossilFuel economy, we are actually jeopardizing the planet.
