The importance of inclusion in the reporting of historic events, etc.. ☮️

Below are the only 11 NCAA Division I universities to spend less than $10M/year on athletics. 5 of the bottom 6 in spending are HBCUs (including the one my father worked at for 30 years). Plus two others are over 70% African American. Chicago State is not an HBCU but is ~70% Black and ~5% White. Arkansas Pine Bluff is 73% Black and 22% White. I am not trying to saying spending more or less is good - just an observation from a comparative standpoint. These are the colleges who are going to be most challenged to compete in their respective leagues. If they are doing well, it would be a good qualitative study to find out why. EDUCATION IS KEY

The NCAA governance model is in B1G/SEC trouble. The SEC and B1G conferences are forming a nameless joint committee to discuss issues regarding governance, NIL, and others. It’s certainly seems as if it’s simply a matter of time before the major conferences form a new alliance that will upend modern collegiate athletics. The beginning of the end for the totalitarian regime may have begun, but will this new joint venture bring sweeping changes or just a governance change in namesake only(?) What are the Educational, Health, or Economic benefits to the Players and their Families for his participation in any additional “NON-SCHOLARSHIP” private third-party postseason football games that pay the Universities and the Conferences for the use of their free labor to put on these highly profitable Bowl events. These additional 1-5 POSTSEASON games are also over the Players’ 12 game athletic scholarship agreement? The answer is ZERO! Our Proposal offers Major Benefits in all three Categories to the Players and their Families! The roughly 7,800 Bowl eligible Scholarship Football Players are owed Hundreds of Millions of dollars from this year’s Media contract that uses the Players’ Name, Image, and Likeness NIL without any equitable financial consideration to the Players or their Families! This lost Money could have a major impact on these Players lives, the lives of their current and future family members for generations? We do not support, or agree with the House vs NCAA Settlement or the current covert attempts to extend and expand this current Antitrust Cartel exploiting our young mostly minority FB &BB labor that the US Supreme Court and Federal District Court have recently struck down as illegal and implausible.

Why It Matters:

I’ve said before that the cohesion and preexisting connection that the Knicks have is special. Not many people get to play with their teammates from college, let alone win multiple national championships with them. Historically, the Knicks weren’t kind to my family 😅 Still, that being said, all is forgiven. I’ve had respect for Nova even when I was playing against them in college. Winning is a matter of good fortune and habits, and the Villanova men’s basketball program has had both of those. It’s the teams that can pivot and adapt that find sustained success. The Villanova men’s basketball program has come together remarkably at the New York Knicks, with four players who won multiple national championships together now playing on the same NBA team. The contrast between my time at Georgetown and Villanova men’s basketball is stark. At Georgetown, the mindset was “when we say jump, you say how high.” In my opinion, Villanova was ahead of the curve, respecting athletes as professionals even during their college years. This respect and professional treatment contributed to their success, a principle that programs like Duke men’s basketball also adopted during that era. Nowadays, with NIL, we see the importance of treating athletes like professionals. Our time is accounted for, and we are required to work even though we weren’t paid. I was required to work as a professional athlete at Georgetown University without compensation. In my opinion, anyone who thinks college athletes shouldn’t be paid is misinformed and is doing a disservice to these athletes. They aren’t focusing on the real problem at hand, which is the lack of financial education and understanding of how to manage this money. Proper financial stewardship only happens when athletes are treated like professionals rather than just college students, which most people fail to do.
