Companies that believe user testing is a cumbersome and arduous process that takes up a lot of the team and users' time may end up skipping it altogether. At Dura Digital, we believe that user testing doesn't have to be time-consuming or complicated, and you definitely have time for it. Here are our top tips for scrappier testing: 1. You don't need a fully functioning prototype to conduct tests. Hand-drawn sketches, wireframes, or different mockup options are perfectly valid options for determining the best solutions. 2. Ask what is the minimum amount of time you can get from users to test. It is especially useful if you are getting pushback that users are too busy. This allows you to tailor your approach based on the time you get. More time = more robust testing, and vice versa. 3. Leverage other people within your company. Test with people outside your team who aren't as familiar with what you're building. Also, talk to colleagues who work in sales or customer support to gain insights into the most frequently raised user concerns. 4. Use asynchronous testing methods, like surveys or polls. These are quick to create, generally require minimal time to analyze (if you stick to quantitative data), and allow users to answer in their own time. Remember, some user testing is always better than no user testing. Top 5 mistakes during user testing. 1. You help users to complete the task. This is not education. This is for you to understand users' mental model, behavior, previous experience, confusions, achievements etc. You are an observer, silent and invisible. By helping users you get skewed results and waste money! 2. You overwhelm users by the number of tasks. Limit it to 5-8 tasks. Users spend their intellectual resources faster under the pressure of being not at the usual place. So ask the most important questions and give the most important tasks first. 3. You try to stand users as uneducated by showing how task should be completed after user has failed. Again, this is not a competition. This is helpful for you to understand how good or bad you did your job. Instead, tell users something like "Ok, now I see how you would like to accomplish this, so I will rework this part, thank you." 4. You do not explain why users are here and what they will do. Start each user testing by short introduction. Tell them the reason they are here is that you need to make sure you did your work good enough so they can use your product. Explain how long it will take, what they and you will do ("You will accomplish some tasks, and I will be watching and making notes"). Don't forget to thank users after they finish. 5. You do all user testing yourself. From our experience, 2 designers are required to conduct 1 user testing. One designer is leading the testing and talking to the user, second usually taking notes, making photos etc. Designers can switch roles, but separate responsibilities usually helps. Hey there, Lets explore What is A/B Testing? A/B testing or split testing, is a quantitative user research method. In this testing researchers show two versions of same design to different users to identify which one perform well. A refers to the original design, while the B refers to the variation of the A design. A/B testing is quick, easy and cheap. Designers and researchers choose this method to test slight difference in their designs. Researchers & Designers use this testing to test individual page elements. It typically measures the difference in conversion rate between two designs. Conversion rate is the percentage of users who complete a desired task or action. The requirement of this testing is, ◾ Before a researcher conduct an A/B testing, their website or app must be fully functional. If the product is unfinished then the test results will be unreliable. Researchers can conduct larger tests for smaller audiences to reach the required sample size. It is possible to measure the impact of testing a standardized element like a button, image, or copy layout in the short run. However, where solid, long-term improvement to CR can be made is by locating customers' / users' biggest pain points and testing accordingly. You can use a combination of... - Technical audits Use this to locate different browsers and devices that have code issues and may not be functioning properly for users. Something in this bucket would be in a "fix immediately" bucket and most likely wouldn't be a test prio. I recommend using googleanalytics with a cross-device breakdown along with@browserstack to verify the problem. - User surveys Probably not utilized enough, user surveys can be conducted in many different ways to assist your team in VoC (voice of customer) research. Understanding exactly what your customers like / dislike about a certain product, how they use it, why they bought it, what words they use, etc helps you write copy that is ultra-targeted to those users. It's also a great way to start using personalization if you're business is big enough to use @AdobeExpCloud and they're personalization engines. - Exit intent polls Simple yet effective. You can have the user rate their experience, answer a simple yes or no question, or write in a response as to why they are leaving. Most won't take you up on this ask but some that were committed to the content but just didn't like something they read or saw may take the time to complete a simple question. - Heat mapping / click mapping / Session Recordings Understanding where your users are looking, clicking, and scrolling while being able to watch the session is super impactful. You are able to start seeing trends of what's working or not. Are users taking the time to read X section? Are users viewing my sub-menu? Are users scrolling AND reading? (time on page X scroll) Are there any annoying pop-ups, errors, or disturbances during the user-journey? Questions like these will help give you insights, insights that you can use to build new test ideas upon. - User testing Get real feedback from people in your audience. Walk them through a buying scenario. Record what they say and the immediate friction points that arise. User testing helps you locate areas on the site that you may not have thought of looking at before or can help you validate a design before you spend time and money on implementing a dev heavy A/B test. All in all, we use a combination of all of these research objectives to gain insights in order to drive growth & experimentation. Otherwise we're testing ideas and not real insights...
