For today’s #ThrowbackThursday, we’re diving into the world of shipping. Shipping is vital to the global economy, enabling the mass transport of goods worldwide. However, the industry is facing tightening emissions regulations, which necessitates the design of increasingly efficient and effective propulsion systems, including propellers. In this blog post, we look at how CONVERGE can be applied to analyze and optimize propeller designs. We highlight several example cases, including steady and transient simulations of a submerged propeller as well as a surface piercing propeller. CONVERGE’s autonomous meshing easily accommodates the propeller motion, and its Adaptive Mesh Refinement helps capture the wake effects. For the surface piercing case, we used CONVERGE’s volume of fluid approach with a surface compression technique to accurately model the multi-phase flow.
