Going to bed last night, I received a message from a colleague, advising of another knife attack unfolding in Sydney. Like many, I struggled to fall asleep, as my mind raced thinking about how many people in our communities are struggling, and suffering after either directly witnessing these senseless knife attacks, or indirectly witnessing them through all of the highly distressing footage that has continued to be shared across media / social media. I understand that people need to be informed about incidents impacting our community, but am I alone in finding it highly inappropriate for news providers to share the ‘actual’ footage of the attack in the church showing the 15 year old attackers actions, let alone the incredibly harrowing live video footage of the Bondi Shopping Centre attack unfolding last Friday, and distressing photos of the victims laying where they fell. My heart breaks for all of the families directly impacted by Fridays attack, who have had to see their loved ones on the news, and watch the mentally ill attacker move through the shopping centre. Thoughts are with the victims in the church, the NSW Police Force first responders who were treated terribly by the community they serve to protect, and with the millions of Australians who continue to struggle with the violence that they continue to witness.
