One for the changemakers out there. I've long been a fan of the Tamarack Institute and was honoured to guest alongside fellow SASS group members Anjum and Jewelz in a recent Tamarack webinar. Together, we discussed learnings from the SASS (Systems-change Advocacy, Support & Solidarity) 'not-white' paper, titled Voices From the Frontlines: Community-Driven Pathways for Systems Change in Aotearoa - and the paper’s five pathways to support systems change: 1. Enable systems change leadership 2. Strengthen relationships and working together 3. Address racism, bias, and exclusion 4. Overcome funding and bureaucracy challenges 5. Encourage experimentation and amplify transformation We covered topics such as relationship-building on the sometimes lonely path of systems change work, equity and power balances, the challenges of alternatives to traditional funding practices, tools for encouraging more progressive funder relationships, how the paper is designed to support other changemakers pushing for change and managing burnout. May it be of service to you. https://lnkd.in/grpwAqWX

Welcome to our new CEO Mary Nega who started today! In the spirit of youth advocacy, here are 3 things Mary’s passionate about and why 👇 🎤 Having your voice heard on issues that impact you: “Otherwise we exacerbate underlying issues or circumstances that vulnerable communities face. Lived experience brings unique thought diversity and positions these groups to be best placed to collaborate and champion implementation efforts among their peers.” 🤝 Equitable access to opportunities for underrepresented communities: “You have to start somewhere. If we don’t build skills or pathways for underrepresented people – especially when they’re young – we create serious obstacles down the line, particularly with access to leadership or decision-making.” 🗨 Having the conversation that needs to be had: “Change starts with a conversation and acknowledging there’s work that needs to be done. The alternative is othering.” We are THRILLED to have Mary and are looking forward to what lies ahead. Members can read Mary’s first CEO message tomorrow morning, direct to their inbox. Public Policy Chief | Public Affairs Executive | Local & Federal Government Expert | Communication Strategist | Advocacy Director | Get It Done Boss
2moIn the "City of Brotherly Love," NLC leaders and strategic partners met for two days to discuss local priorities. I briefed our partners on the latest congressional action on pending reauthorizations such as WIOA, FARM Bill, EDA, and FAA, as well as bills like the Railway Safety Act that we are determined to get to the President's desk for signature. We also discussed President Biden Administration's work to ensure that the federal government works for smaller local governments, our very own #LocalInfrastructureHub that helps municipalities apply for federal infrastructure grants, and the recently released EPA rules on PFAS. As NLC's director of federal advocacy, I sincerely appreciated the opportunity to have strategic conversations. It's so helpful when we can discuss the intersection of priorities with our corporate and strategic business partners. Last, you know the issue of housing was front and center with NLC's very own Lauren A. Lowery, MPA leading the discussion. Kudos to Seantae Byers, Brandon Natsuhara, Linda A. Gatti, Darryl Edwards, MPP, and Carmel Jones for a job well done.
