Husband | Dad | Team Leader | Balancing Life | Hope is NOT a Plan Podcast (Self-Improvement & Productivity)️
It is beyond human capabilities to control nature. However, we can control who we appoint to crucial positions in the government and how we collaborate with our partners to prepare for any emergency. By bridging the gap between localities, creating a collaborative planning process, and preparing for disasters, we can significantly mitigate the damage and loss of life. In 2023, it is imperative that we hire an experienced Emergency Management professional, who has practical experience, instead of political appointments. It is equally important to pay these Emergency Managers the wages they deserve. In my opinion, if we continue to pay online influencers or political appointees more than Emergency Managers, we will end up with inexperienced people who do not have the motivation to put in the extra work and long hours required to truly prepare a locality for disasters, such as the fires in Maui. https://lnkd.in/da9auF2b

Last week I passed the five year mark as Director at SF DEM. And what a five years it has been! I feel incredibly humbled by and proud of the people at DEM - the dispatchers and the entire 911 team, our emergency managers, our regional UASI planning team, the EMS Agency team, our newest and growing group - street response coordination and the many amazing support staff that make this work possible, HR, IT, facilities, and special projects (like the massively important CAD replacement project). I could do long posts about each of these groups - there are important stories to tell about each of them. Last month I participated in a panel at the Natural Hazards Workshop in Denver with my incredible colleagues from Denver, Los Angeles, and my original hometown, Philadelphia. We all spoke from the heart about our own experiences and where we see the current and future state of emergency management. If I could summarize the over-arching theme to this conversation it would be that our scope has expanded - exponentially. That climate change and politics has had the most impact on our work (outside of the global pandemic) and that community, diversity and inclusion is paramount to our success. And all of this has taken a toll on us, and our staff. We are taking on crisis management in areas that we would not have predicted ten years ago. So whether it is homelessness, the fentanyl crisis, immigration and asylum seekers, extreme weather or political unrest, Emergency Management has been called into service. We need to recruit and hire staff who are creative, analytical and diverse. We need planners, project managers, and community outreach workers. And we need to take care of them. The work of emergency management becomes more challenging everyday. It is interesting and rewarding, but it also takes it toll. So as I look forward I know we face huge and expanding challenges. We need to expand resources and include self-care and care of our staff as a priority. To be a leader in this field at this time is a privilege and a challenge. One that we will meet with resolve, commitment, and experience. I know that I will work hard, and also prioritize time to restore to continue to serve. I will continue to go to the mountains and the sea for my peace and restoration. We serve, we work, we play and we love. Onward! #emergencymanagement #crisismanagement #climatechangeadaptation #climatechange #wellness

Maui Emergency Management Chief resigns over decision to not use the outdoor warning siren system during the recent wildfires in that community. Article here: https://lnkd.in/gihrf5W7 This story highlights two things for me: First, I managed an outdoor warning siren system early in my career. Understanding how and when to use these systems, and what pre-disaster training and public education is necessary for them to be effective, is poorly understood by elected officials and the public. If you are an emergency manager with an outdoor warning siren system, this is a wake-up call. Second, there is a long-standing urban legend in Oregon about emergency managers that keep a letter of resignation in their desk for use in case of a large disaster. I always thought it was a myth; now I am less sure. (This Washington Post article is behind a paywall, but it is worth reading if you are an emergency manager with a outdoor warning siren system.)

Wildland Fire Dispatchers Face Burnout Crisis 🔥 Wildland fire dispatchers, crucial in managing fast-spreading wildfires, are facing severe burnout, compromising their health, safety, and the effectiveness of firefighting efforts. A recent survey by the U.S. Forest Service in Oregon and Washington's Region 6 reveals alarming issues: overworked dispatchers, recruitment challenges, and mental health struggles. Staff shortages lead to exhaustive 16-hour shifts, impacting work/life balance and jeopardizing their well-being. Dispatchers report feeling undervalued, with low pay and lack of recognition exacerbating the problem. Despite temporary pay raises for some, a long-term solution is elusive. Urgent calls for improved staffing, pay, and mental health support echo throughout the dispatch community, highlighting a crisis in the wildfire response system.
