Happy #NationalWildlandFirefighterDay! Did you know that 30% of wildland firefighters in California are currently incarcerated? Since WWII, Cal Fire has partnered with California prisons to run the Conservation Camp Program, which trains eligible prisoners to become firefighters. Inmate firefighters in California are paid up to $2/hour, or up to $3/hour for 24-hour shifts during peak fire season. (In comparison, non-prisoner state firefighters are paid around $39/hour.) They're also 8x as likely to be injured from smoke inhalation than their non-inmate firefighter colleagues. The state of California considers the inmates in the program as firefighters, but after they leave prison it's nearly impossible for them to become professional firefighters. In 2020, California passed AB 2147, making it slightly easier for ex-prisoner firefighters to get hired. There's a long way to go but this law was a key first step towards firefighting equity. It's up to Californians to keep the pressure on our politicians so we can fix this system. All that being said, be sure to thank a firefighter when you see them! And make sure you vote to support them. They're literally saving lives. #firefighters

The show “Deadliest Catch” has run for 19 seasons. The show follows crab fishermen aboard fishing boats in the Bering Sea during the Alaskan crab fishing seasons. The show illustrates the incredible dangers on deck to the fishermen and camera crews as they attempt to make their catch — from hundreds of pounds of crab swinging through the air to the gale-force winds and 25 foot waves attempting to take their ship down. Well, much like the dangers those fishermen face, today we’re talking about another kind of deadly — the world’s deadliest employees. Imagine what happens when those fishing crew have a C-player, who doesn’t follow safety procedures, doesn’t follow orders, and puts everyone’s lives in grave danger because of their actions. https://lnkd.in/dPwUYdRX

Today, the port authority-led ECHO Program concluded its longest-running season of voluntary measures to reduce the impacts of commercial ship traffic on endangered southern resident killer whales. For the last 182 days, ship operators from over 100 marine transportation organizations have voluntarily slowed down or moved away from key areas of southern resident killer whale critical habitat. These measures spanned across more than 80 nautical miles, or 148 kilometres, of southern resident killer whale critical habitat off the coast of B.C. and Washington State. Thanks to the marine transportation industry’s strong participation, the ECHO Program’s ship slowdowns have been shown to reduce whale strike risk by up to nearly 30% and reduce underwater noise by 50% –– helping to reduce key threats to at-risk whales like ship strikes and acoustic disturbance. Please join us in thanking the ECHO Program’s many partners, advisors, and participants, who helped measurably reduce threats to whales in the waters off our coast.

"Rapid and accurate fire intelligence makes an enormous difference in how efficiently and effectively crews can address wildfires," says Gregory Denton, Overwatch Imaging Business Development Executive. "If crews can catch fires when they’re small, and focus on the hottest, most critical sections on the front lines, we can increase efficiencies, reduce time to contain and, ultimately, achieve significant long-term cost reduction." Mitigating the risk to mission from climate change is not only prudent, it's a requirement. As the planet warms the range of "normal" becomes greater, meaning weather patterns can be unpredictable in their intensity. From the article: "“We cannot launch or recover aircraft on a flooded runway, nor can we operate from installations devastated by hurricanes and wildfires,” Dr. Ravi I. Chaudhary, assistant secretary of the Air Force for energy, installations, and the environment, wrote in a Climate Campaign Plan unveiled in July. “Our bases are our power projection platforms and as those bases are increasingly impacted by the effects of climate change, adapting to these challenges will be critical to meet our national security obligation.”" #climatechange #installationresiliency #climateactionplan #airforce #spaceforce
