Wrote this blog post last July about how museums can be less racist. I begin by discussing a recent dissatisfying experience at The Art Institute in Chicago and then dive into my own thoughts and research about strategic plans surrounding anti-racism. I wrap it up by highlighting some museums that are doing it right like The Tucson Museum Of Art. Let me know what you think, and visit my website for more blog posts, paintings & museum exhibition design.

Looking at people looking at art: inside the mind of a gallery attendant. This article by Wallpaper* shares wonderful personal stories and some of their key observations that might sound familiar to frequent museum visitors: - Most people only spend (about eight) seconds looking at a piece of art, while others dive deep, spending hours soaking in every detail. - Because of social media, there's a boom in interest for immersive and interactive art exhibitions, with many (younger) visitors snapping photos rather than fully engaging with the art itself. - Reactions to art are all over the map—from laughter and tears to, occasionally, some naughty behavior like touching or even purposefully damaging (climate activists) the artwork. But more interestingly: - Over time, seeing the same artworks again and again can shift the attendants' own understanding and appreciation of these pieces. - Lately, visitors are also pondering big-picture questions about the purpose and inclusivity of museums, making the experience not just about looking at art, but about rethinking its place in our world. Studies show that the average museum visitor spends apprx. 27 seconds with each artwork. Barely enough time to register the title, let alone appreciate the artist's genius. Here's why slowing down is the secret art superpower you never knew you had: ▶ Deeper Connections: slowing down allows us to process art on a deeper level, unlocking its ability to move us and spark new ideas. ▶Sensory Symphony: By slowing down, you can truly appreciate the artist's craftsmanship and the way they use these elements to tell a story. ▶Mind-Blowing Insights: Give yourself time to contemplate a piece, you might find yourself surprised by the unexpected thoughts and feelings it evokes. Ready to ditch the museum dash and embrace the Slow Art revolution? Here are some tips: -Choose 2-3 pieces that call to you and focus your attention there. -Notice details like brushstrokes, color choices, and hidden symbols. What story is the artist trying to tell? -Don't be afraid to let the art move you. Does it evoke joy, sadness, or something else entirely? -Talk to your friends or fellow museum-goers about what you see and feel. Sometimes, another perspective can unlock a whole new way of understanding a piece. ️ What piece of art has left you speechless? Intrigued by the idea of Slow Art, but worried you might get bored just standing there? Challenge yourself! ArtVista. For: Artists: Artists, Art Enthusiasts/Collectors, Art Galleries, and Museums. Dissatisfied with: Traditional art growth and promotional methods that often lack interactivity and inclusivity eg; ● Physical Exhibitions: Artists may find it challenging to reach a broader audience beyond those who can physically attend the exhibition. ● Art Shows and Fairs: Smaller or emerging artists may find it difficult to secure space or afford participation fees, limiting their exposure. ● Print Media Advertising: Traditional advertising in newspapers, magazines, and art journals lacks interactivity and engagement. ● Gallery Representation: While being represented by a gallery can provide credibility and exposure for artists, it often comes with high commissions and exclusivity agreements. This model may not be inclusive for artists who don't fit the gallery's aesthetic or commercial objectives. ● Auction Houses: The high entry barriers and competitive bidding processes may discourage emerging artists and smaller collectors from participating. ● Museum Exhibitions: Their exhibitions can sometimes feel distant and unengaging for the general public. Interactive elements are often limited, and there may be a lack of diversity in the artists and artworks featured. ● Artist Residencies: Access to prestigious residencies may be limited to artists with certain credentials or connections. Due to: Limited visibility, Community engagement, Art resources, and information, difficulty in reaching the target audience, and genuine connections That provides: ● Visibility and Exposure ● Community Building ● Monetization Opportunities ● Artistic Development ● Curation and Discovery ● Industry Insights ● Support for Art Entities Share your thoughts, ideas, and expectations for ArtVista via the links. What happens in a #museum when it suspects that a work of art in one of its exhibitions or its permanent collection has been #misattributed? What are a museum’s #standard #procedures and strategies for examining the #attribution of works that enter its space? How can museums move beyond the opinion of a single expert or curator by engaging different kinds of impartial specialists? How can the museum make the public aware of its research processes, and ultimately, its results? Today, there are still no shared standards for museums on how to conduct #duediligence on art or how to communicate findings to the public. With the growing trend toward institutional #transparency, some pioneering international museums are beginning to look for new ways to review and ask serious questions about their own collections and the works displayed in their spaces. Three recent cases on works attributed to #Vermeer, #Titian and #Donatello show different ways museums can conduct due diligence on artworks. They offer insights into the fascinating and complex process of #attribution of artworks--even (or especially?) in the age of #AI. All these examples are in line with the principles of #TheHeckerStandard®, a best-practices approach to conducting due diligence on artworks. #conceptualart #conceptualartist #kinetic #kineticart #contemporaryart #contemporaryartworks #artissima #turin #torino #artfair #artfairs #giuseppealletto #theothers Video Art Installation at The Others Contemporary Art Fair Turin Italy 2023 - Giuseppe Alletto shorts videos By Shira Wolfe In the second half of the twentieth century popular entertainment began to move away from the culture of books, magazines and periodicals that had held sway for centuries, and into the realm of the moving image. The exciting new cultural developments, allied to rapid technological progress and the availability of consumer electronics, ensured that television and film became ripe for exploitation by artists, both as subjects for artistic commentary such as in the work of Pop artists, but also to explore as a medium and vehicle for the artistic content itself. However, despite the fact that video art is arguably the most apposite medium for echoing the mores and characteristics of contemporary society, there are several reasons why video art is still considered amongst the most challenging for art lovers and and collectors. Many video works seem as if they might require special access to expensive or unwieldy technological equipment, whilst the seeming lack of tangible object ownership unlike that associated with painting and sculpture creates additional wariness. However, the most common objection seems to be the time based element of the work. Time, for many, is the most valuable commodity of all, and the very fact that a video work demands a greater kind of commitment and attention than a painting or a sculpture, is enough for it to be considered too challenging for many to be truly embraced in a broad sense. Many of the early prominent video artists were those involved with concurrent movements in conceptual art, performance, and experimental film. These include Americans Vito Acconci, John Baldessari, Joan Jonas, Dan Graham, Bruce Nauman, Peter Campus, William Wegman, Martha Rosler and many others. There were other innovators were who were interested in the formal qualities of video as a means of image making and employed video synthesizers to create abstract works. In the 1980s video art enjoyed a further renaissance, when advances in editing technology for the individual user led to a spate of works that developed both narrative and non-linearity, but also stream of consciousness explorations of psychology, which were especially served through advances in technology that could facilitate interactivity.
