So often, many of us with disabilities have gone or go to great lengths to avoid using the tools that would help us maintain our independence or avoid asking for the help we need to maintain our autonomy. Maybe it’s because we believe that our needs will be burdensome to others or that we’ll be perceived as incapable. Whatever the case may be, when we don't advocate for ourselves or ask for help, we hide those parts of ourselves that allow us to meaningfully connect with others and own who we are as our most authentic selves. This is your reminder to show up as the most authentic you and advocate for what you need 👏👏 ID: Black background with an off-white text that reads: Who are you hiding your disability from? #Disability #Language #Disabled #Inclusion #Community #DisabilityRights

Disability isn’t the issue here. The key is ensuring the world is inclusive and accessible to everyone. We should recognize that accessibility, rather than disability, is where the focus should be. Together, we can break down barriers and create a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive! Image Description: Black background. Today marks 34 years since the signing and passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. As we commemorate the historic signing of the #ADA, let's honor the efforts that paved the way for #disability rights. Their stories and struggles brought monumental change, and while there is still progress to be made, we owe it to them to keep pushing for a more inclusive future. #ADAAnniversary #DisabilityRights #Inclusion https://lnkd.in/gAcguBQY

Does your organisation use inclusive imagery? You should! We give you some tips in our latest blog….
In 2020, in a step forward in creating an inclusive society, stock image company Getty Images created a ‘Disability Collection’ by launching more than 1,000 diverse and real images. Since then, many more sources of images of people with disabilities have been popping up across the internet. And rightfully so! In our latest blog, we cover the importance of using inclusive imagery and where to find good images for the Australian market. As we wrap up National Disability Employment Awareness Month, let’s consider this tip from "How to Be a Disability Ally" by Meryl Evans, CPACC (deaf) : Ask before helping. Evans wrote, “Many folks want to be helpful to everyone, not just disabled people. I know people mean well when they jump in and try to help someone. Imagine a stranger coming up to you, putting their hands on your jacket, and invading your space. This is uncomfortable. And that’s what it feels like when someone suddenly tries to push a person’s wheelchair without asking. We must respect people’s space including people with disabilities. So, ask and get a yes answer before helping. Sometimes, people ask and help anyway. Give the person a chance to respond and respect their response.” Evans shared a suggestion for how to ask from @disabilityin’s etiquette guide: “Let me know if you need anything.” It’s a simple way to signal you’re willing to help without assuming you might know what help they need. -- This is an excerpt from my upcoming “5 Ally Actions” newsletter. Since it's Disability Pride Month, we are clearly going to discuss the disability community and the people that comprise it. Language is important, especially when dealing with a marginalized group, so we wanted to provide a quick resource for some of the preferred terminology and phrases for various disabilities. As you may have noticed, the common thread is "people first" language, meaning you identify the person before their disability. All this being said, the most important rule is to refer to someone the way they ask you to. There are some people that may identify differently than we have listed below or how you were taught is correct. That's ok! It's up to the individual to choose how they want to be addressed. However, if you aren't sure where to start, this guide can be a great reference tool! #DisabilityPrideMonth #DisabilityPride #Disability #WordsMatter #LanguageMatters #Accessible #Ableism #Neurodiversity #ADA #DEI #DEIB #Diversity #Equity #Inclusion #Belonging #Inclusivity #PeopleFirst #PeopleFirstLangugage

Ever wondered how words shape our perception of disability? Did you know the terms we once used to describe intellectual disabilities were not just labels, but barriers? Words that were once commonplace in medical and social discourse not only failed to capture the full humanity of individuals but also contributed to a legacy of exclusion and stigma. Today, I'm here to share a message of hope and progress. As we've evolved in our understanding and acceptance, so has our language. We've moved from stigmatizing names to a language of dignity and respect. Let's commit to words that heal, empower, and include. Together, we're not just changing the conversation; we're transforming the narrative around disability to one of joy, strength, and boundless optimism.
