How can you tell a shark’s age? 🤔 The lengths, weights and growth rates of the sand tiger sharks in our Shark Alley exhibit allow our aquarists to estimate their age. For sharks that have resided at the Aquarium for many years, veterinary staff use ultrasound to look for abnormal masses or digestive tract changes that affect nutrient uptake. 🦈 Learn how our staff takes care of aging animals here at the Aquarium: https://bit.ly/3W6O2YT

Hello LinkedIn family! Today, I’d like to share some insights into the intricacies of my work. As an aquarium veterinarian, ensuring the health and well-being of the inhabitants of the underwater world is my priority. In my recent intervention, I addressed an issue related to the continuous growth of the teeth of Arothron nigropunctatus. The teeth of this species continuously grow and can cause problems if proper care is not provided. Therefore, I performed a specialized procedure to blunt their teeth. This procedure helps improve the fish’s health and feeding habits while enhancing their quality of life. Aquarium veterinary medicine requires a delicate balance to maintain the health of living beings that are part of nature. Hence, I meticulously plan and execute each intervention. I hope this post proves informative for those interested in aquarium care and animal health. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me. Wishing you healthy days ahead! #AquariumVeterinaryMedicine #FishHealth #ArothronNigropunctatus #VeterinaryScience #AnimalHealth #AquariumCare 🐟🌊

Unique insights into the social lives of cattle🐂 revealed in a new study by scientists at CityUHK can enhance our understanding of animal behaviour and welfare. Led by Professor Alan McElligott and PhD researcher George M. W. Hodgson, both from the Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health in the Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences at CityUHK, the study suggests that sex and social status influence social grooming (where one animal licks another, also known as allogrooming) among free-ranging feral cattle in Hong Kong.👍🏻 The CityUHK researchers found that feral cattle performed preferential grooming of certain individuals and, in particular, that more dominant females received more grooming. This asymmetrical distribution of licking also applied to whom male cattle decided to lick, according to the study published in “Animal Behaviour”.
