Getting plans on the ground is critical to making an impact. All the best plans are nothing without execution. I have worked through many avenues in my career: Push Button Projects, Design Build, Maintenance Contracts, working with local partners, and more! There are many ways to execute, what's important is that we do! Understand that there is opportunity cost by not implementing sooner. There is a cost to delayed implementation, and when we are talking about safety and community health, that cost can be high. Let's work to get these projects built and keep that end goal in mind as we execute!

For those who have traveled the 101 north out of Humboldt County, or traveled south into the county, the 'last chance grade' s finally (after nine years) open the two-way traffic. The alternative is a detour, inland, of several hours. Not a good solution for a busy highway. Why so long, you ask? The 101 was originally built decades ago in this spot literally on a cliff side and almost every winter after the rains the cliff would let go requiring 'maintenance'. The fix was always to repair the existing roadbed. More slides, more 'fixes'. More OPEX. Nine years ago the area had a really wet winter and the cliff-side collapsed taking all the underpinnings installed over the years with it. It has taken since then with other minor, but expected, slides in the meantime to finally open the section to two-way traffic. There are tentative plans to tunnel through the mountain to eliminate this costly road repair site, but that CAPEX has to be funded. In the meantime millions and millions have been spent on 'fixes', e.g., OPEX. Sound familiar?

🌐 As the landscape of transportation design evolves, it is imperative that our approaches to the roadway right of way evolve with it. Complete Corridors represents a holistic approach to viewing our roads to foster #innovation, #sustainability, and #resilience. 🚧 Scott Sandstrom, PE, PMP is a visionary in building the roadways of tomorrow. In this video he shares his expertise on the necessity of optimizing the road right of way. He explains the significant time and cost savings offered by the "dig once" concept and how communities can take advantage of the potential benefits of a complete corridors project. 🛣️ Scott Sandstrom has been at the forefront since 2010, his current role being discipline leader for complete corridors design. He has consistently pushed the boundaries of conventional thinking to enhance roadway, transit, and bridge projects, all while prioritizing the unique needs of his clients. Scott's objective is to broaden the perspective of transportation planning, ensuring our corridors are not only optimized for the present but look towards the future. 🚗 Interested in converting your fleet to electric vehicles? The challenges of planning our works on large road projects old school style! As great as our online markups are nothing beats the in person collaboration around a drawing. But we don’t like the environmental impact and we don’t want a bigger main meeting room table, so Martin Hodgkinson these days are now limited! 😁 #engineering #planning #environmentalsustainability
