Reading about the world’s most decorated Olympian, Michael Phelps, and his coach, Bob Bowman, I found a valuable lesson in their unique approach. Bowman often broke Phelps’ goggles during practice sessions without warning, forcing him to swim blind. This may sound harsh, but it was a deliberate strategy to train Phelps to handle unexpected challenges. During the 2008 Beijing Olympics, while competing for his fifth gold medal in the 200m butterfly, Phelps experienced his worst nightmare: his goggles filled with water at the 60m mark. Thanks to Bowman’s training, Phelps was prepared. He had learned to count his strokes, feel the rhythm of a perfect stroke, and detect any deviation without relying on sight. Despite the malfunction, Phelps won the race and set a world record. This incredible feat underscored the importance of preparing for the worst. It got me thinking about how we can apply this mindset to our professional lives. Whether facing a market downturn, a critical project going off-track, or unexpected operational hiccups, our response defines our success. Not One, Or Two, But Three Consecutive World Titles...All Over Hurdles! Grant Holloway, the US 110 meter high-hurdler was a two-time defending World Champion in his event entering today. Today in Budapest, Holloway lined up to defend his title against the best hurdlers from around the world. To get to a final in any championship meet involves 2-3 rounds where the field is culled down to the top 8 (or however many lanes there are on the track). And EVERY time a hurdler takes the track, he/she has to deal with the fact that there are 10 hurdles that need to be navigated successfully while striving to be the fastest one to cross the line. Each hurdle is 3 foot, 6 inches tall! Holloway won the Worlds in 2019 and again in 2022. Tonight he was looking for the three-peat. And wow did he get it - 110 meters and 10 hurdles all covered in less than 13 seconds. Yes, it's as mind-blowing as it seems. Well done, Grant Holloway, it's hard enough to win ONE world title, we take our hats off to you for doing it THREE times in a row! That's not just high performance, it's sustaining it - and all the while, everyone wants to take out the champion. I landed in the sand for my final attempt and felt very confident that I’d put the nail in the coffin. WRONG! I had only tied my previous long jump mark, which ultimately solidified me as the seventh-place finisher. Seventh place? I haven’t finished less than silver since 2011. That was twelve years ago. If you’re wondering, I’m talking about how I did at the most recent World Para Athletics Championships. It wasn’t the performance that I intended to have. I flew back home to the States, only to be bombarded with questions of "What happened?", "Did you get injured or something?", "Was it too loud in the stadium?" I get it. Something had to have happened for me to finish so low in the standings, but if you know me then you know I’m one who isn’t big on excuses. Sure, I can tell you that I had a few very minor injuries during the season. I felt fine on competition day though. I could talk about the adjustments that I’ve had to make being a first-time dad. Sure, it’s taken a lot, but I felt fine on competition day. I could say this and say that, but the reality is, I felt like I was going to win gold that day, and it just didn’t happen. If you’ve read my most recent book, then you probably know that I’m so focused on achieving my vision that I rarely give time for those failed attempts and opportunities to fester in my mind. Sure, take time to process and heal from those failures, but the goal is to keep moving forward. Something is always going to happen and it’s not going to always happen in our favor, but you have to keep pushing ahead no matter what. #Paris2024 #Journey #Paralympics #TrackandField #blind #athlete #longjump #teamusa

Leadership Matters: A Ryder Cup Postscript Congratulations to the European Team and Captain Luke Donald on a decisive 16.5 - 11.5 Ryder Cup victory in Rome. Here’s just a few of the competitive advantages the Europeans exploited on their way to victory (aside from the obvious home crowd): - Inspiration: The Europeans had 12 players but 13 lockers. The extra was in memory and spirit of Seve Ballesteros which was a source of inspiration for the winning team. Luke Donald pulled on the heartstrings of his team and it worked. - Championship Form: The Americans hadn’t played competitive golf in 5 weeks and it showed getting shutout in the first session 4-0. Each of the 12 European players competed in the BMW PGA Championship September 14-17 on the DP World Tour. There’s a big difference between rested and rusty. - Captain’s Picks: US Captain Zach Johnson made 6 captains picks and they combined for a 4-12-4 record. On paper the US had better talent, but the Europeans had a better TEAM suited for the course at Marco Simone. Interestingly Luke Donald wasn’t the original pick to lead the European Team. He was pressed into service a little more than a year ago to replace Henrik Stenson when he jumped to the LIV Tour. Now many are calling for Donald to lead the Europeans at the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in New York. Captains matter. Leadership matters! #Leadership #coaching #RyderCup
