Recognizing the pain and suffering endured by Indigenous communities because of our nation's actions is a somber reminder that reconciliation isn't just a term; it's an ongoing commitment. It’s about acknowledging the truth, no matter how uncomfortable, and working collectively to foster understanding, respect, and healing. Every step towards reconciliation is a step towards a Canada where all voices are heard, respected, and valued. 🍁 Today, it was my absolute pleasure to lead a Lunch and Learn session to my wonderful coworkers at Access Alliance Multicultural Health and Community Services, marking Truth and Reconciliation Day in Canada. 🇨🇦 Several vital topics, fostering understanding and empathy were discussed: 1️⃣ The Sixties Scoop, shedding light on its impact and consequences. 2️⃣ Treaty Rights, exploring the significance of these agreements. 3️⃣ Residential Schools, a somber but essential part of Canadian history. 4️⃣ Phyllis Webstad's story and why we wear orange shirts, symbolizing hope and remembrance. 5️⃣ Jordan's Principles, advocating for equitable healthcare for Indigenous children. 6️⃣ Indigenous Peoples' rights and history, embracing the rich tapestry of their culture. 7️⃣ Active Allyship, emphasizing our role in supporting reconciliation efforts. 8️⃣ The concept of "Dish with One Spoon" and its values, promoting harmony and shared responsibility. On July 1, CMHA-WECB joins many across the country in reflecting on Canada’s past and future. While many celebrate, we recognize that for Indigenous peoples in Canada, this day is a time of mourning rather than celebration. "Canada" represents a settler-colonial project that is ongoing, and has a legacy of systemic racism which continues to cast a long shadow, rooted in history marked by violence, discrimination, and cultural genocide against Indigenous communities in Canada. These harsh realities persist, profoundly impacting the mental health and well-being of Indigenous people every day. The Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action were created to advance the process of reconciliation, however the Yellowhead Institute's 2023 status update revealed that zero actions were completed in the last year. The update also reveals that in total only 13 of the 94 actions have been completed since the release of the calls to action in 2015. 🌞 Today, on National Indigenous Peoples Day, we honor the rich culture, heritage, and contributions of Indigenous communities across Canada. For generations, Indigenous groups have celebrated this day, coinciding with the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. This significant day, originally proclaimed as National Aboriginal Day in 1996 by then Governor General Roméo LeBlanc, has evolved through the years thanks to the tireless advocacy of Indigenous leaders and communities. From the Assembly of First Nations' call for a National Aboriginal Solidarity Day in 1982 to the renaming as National Indigenous Peoples Day in 2017, this day stands as a testament to the enduring strength and vibrant cultures of Indigenous Peoples. At Project Reconciliation, we are deeply committed to economic reconciliation, fostering meaningful Indigenous ownership and partnership in Canada's energy transition. In the shadows of Canada's history lies a painful and often unspoken truth—the hardships endured by Indigenous communities for generations. These communities have faced systemic injustices, cultural suppression, and a legacy of trauma that continues to impact lives today. It's crucial that we shed light on this dark history and support their ongoing quest for justice. For centuries, Indigenous peoples faced colonization, displacement from their ancestral lands, and the devastating consequences of residential schools. The intergenerational trauma from these experiences runs deep, affecting individuals, families, and communities. It's a legacy that cannot be ignored. But in the face of adversity, Indigenous communities have shown incredible strength and resilience. They seek justice through various avenues, including legal action, truth and reconciliation commissions, and grassroots movements. These efforts aim to address historical injustices, offer reparations, and pave the way for healing and reconciliation. Canada has taken steps toward acknowledging this painful history, such as the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's work. However, much more work must be done to ensure that justice is served, Indigenous voices are heard, and meaningful change takes place. As responsible and empathetic citizens, it's our duty to listen, learn, and stand in solidarity with Indigenous peoples in their quest for justice. By acknowledging this dark history and supporting their ongoing efforts, we can collectively work towards a more equitable and just Canada—one that respects the rights and dignity of all its inhabitants. Let's break the silence and engage in meaningful conversations about this dark chapter in Canada's history.
