I’m choosing not to celebrate Canada Day, as I have done for several years now. As a proud immigrant, it’s disheartening to see Canada’s ongoing treatment of Indigenous communities. Many Indigenous communities still lack access to clean drinking water. As of 2024, 28 long-term drinking water advisories remain in effect in 23 Indigenous communities. This is unacceptable. Every year, I create signs for our community lawns to remind people of these ongoing issues. While celebrating Canada, we must also acknowledge and address these injustices. Let’s make Canada a place where everyone has access to human rights, like clean water. Only then can we truly celebrate our country.
