This morning, NASSCO was thrilled to take part in San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) Bike Anywhere Day 🚲 , as we were one of many pit stop locations throughout the county supporting our biking community. It was inspiring to see so many participants embracing sustainable transportation and enjoying the ride. As Mayor of the City of Pinole, I'm excited to announce our city's efforts to develop its first-ever Active Transportation Plan (ATP) — we're launching Walk and Roll Pinole! Over the next few months, we're collecting data from our residents, visitors, and other interested parties to identify opportunities to improve walking and bicycling in Pinole and support our regional and state climate goals in reducing vehicle miles travelled (VMT) and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The ATP represents an aspirational vision for walking and bicycling in Pinole, identifying potential financing for improvements while recognizing that limited funding and resources may require strategic phases of implementation over many years. Improving walkability and bike ability in Pinole is a critical way to reduce emissions, while improving the quality of life for our residents. Investing in public transit, affordable housing, and other infrastructure locally means investing in our economy, the health of our community, and the environment. Here's our clear goals as we create our town's first Active Transportation Plan: 1. Increase connectivity and accessibility by providing a cohesive network of facilities for people to walk, bicycle, and roll 2. Foster a safer environment for pedestrians and bicyclists 3. Reduce vehicle miles travelled by encouraging active transportation and multimodal travel 4. 🚲 The #CCWEL (City Centre West East Link) cycle route had its official opening in Edinburgh last week. On a crisp, wintry morning a few weeks ago, I went with some colleagues to check it out. 👇 The newest cycle route to roll out in Scotland and a sign of much more to come, with others already showing a huge impact. 😀 Last year, Cycling Scotland shared data from Victoria Road on Glasgow's 'South City Way', a newly completed 2.5km cycle route some of the most densely populated neighbourhoods in the southside to the city centre. 📈 The data showed 𝗯𝗶𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝟭𝟯% 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰 on Victoria Road (creeping towards Dutch modal share levels, with 1-2% being more typical for a similar Scottish street - https://lnkd.in/eT_3_HHN). Research continually shows that road safety is the biggest barrier to more people cycling. Routes like this are already making a real difference, helping people to get from A to B by bike when they might not have done so before. I know from my own experience that having something like this on your doorstep can be the difference between a trip cycled or not. As the routes roll out and networks begin to connect up, it's exciting to think how many more people will be helped to get on their bikes in 2024. #cycling #activetravel #scotland

The latest in a growing number of protected on-street cycle routes in Scotland, this is already making a big difference in helping many people to cycle safely into the centre from the city’s west end. The biggest mistake you can make when rocking up to any event, is rocking up with a bike that hasn't been serviced. That, and not having trained properly. But that's a whole different discussion. When heading into an event like Cape Town Cycle Tour, which is just around the corner, you'll want to make sure that you do the following 3 things: 1. Have your bike washed and lubed. The guys are then able to do a "basic working order" check. 2. Have your bike shop check that your tyres are still good to go. If your bike has been standing for some time, there could be a chance your tyres have perished. 3. Check that your peddles and cleats are still working properly. The last thing you want is to be stuck midrace with a shoe that doesn't clip in or out because it broke off. With only a couple weeks to Cape Town's biggest road race, make sure you leave yourself enough time to book your bike in for some TLC. Don't leave it to the day before. Book an appointment today.

What a difference! This before & after footage of Queensbridge Street highlights the results of a recent Monash Uni study that found more than 59% of women don’t want to ride on our roads due concerns about being injured from a collision with a motor vehicle. The ‘before’ image of narrow on-road painted lanes currently makes up 93% of our cycling infrastructure across Melbourne. The ‘after’ vid shows the difference that Orca’s locally made traffic management solutions make. These products are polymer concrete that’s manufactured using recycled glass in place of virgin quarried minerals. In fact, up to 80% of the dry components of our products consist of glass which could be otherwise destined for landfill. Every 1 kilometre of Orca bike lane separators installed on our roads potentially diverts around 150,000 glass bottles from landfill while improving road safety, and confidence for all cyclists. https://lnkd.in/gb-EjkhB #roadsafety #infrastructure #locallymade #orca

It’s an interesting debate about space and safety we have in our cities. No one thinks twice about having a safe road/driving space with things like lanes, traffic lights and roundabouts. We are usually pretty good (but not always) at providing safe walk spaces with footpaths. Then when it comes to allocating a safe space for biking, people seem to go nuts - why when I am biking am I expected to have a lower level of safety and space than when I walk or drive? Even the small changes like this (thanks Wellington City Council ) make a difference to our safety and space.
