In celebration of #AsianAmericanAndPacificIslanderHeritageMonth, we honor Rear Admiral Gordon Chung-Hoon, the namesake of (DDG 93) currently undergoing maintenance and repairs in the #NASSCO floating dry dock. Rear Admiral Chung-Hoon was a distinguished U.S. Navy officer who served in World War II and became the first Asian American flag officer. He was awarded the Navy Cross and Silver Star for his extraordinary bravery heroism as the commanding officer of the USS Sigsbee from May 1944 to October 1945. 🌟 #AAPIHeritageMonth

Brett Hershman for the 80th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack, USS CHUNG HOON made her way right at 0800 past USS ARIZONA and PCU INOUYE to render honors to port and starboard for INOUYE’s commissioning. My wife and I, along with other Nob Hill residents, watched quietly from the Nob Hill banyan tree. It was quite memorable as the ship named for CHUNG HOON (Punahou grad, USS ARIZONA survivor, Navy Cross and Silver Star recipient, and first Asian American ship CO) rendered honors to the INOUYE (McKinley grad, 442nd, MOH Recipient and nearly 50 year Senator), both local boys who made history. Both were very young men when the war started, INOUYE a senior and Red Cross volunteer and CHUNG HOON a LT. The symbolism and heritage was rich. So glad to have witnessed it! It meant a lot to my wife Chris, whose grandfather also fought in the 442nd.
