Happy New Year!!! While some embark on the tradition of setting New Year's resolutions, I look at the new year a bit differently...not as a chance to set new goals, but as an opportunity to hit the "reset" button and embrace the fresh start that a new year brings. To reflect on lessons learned, and leverage those experiences to chart the course towards a new and improved version of myself. As far as goals go, I commit to ongoing personal and professional development. Setting goals on a quarterly and weekly basis, with the guidance of an accountability partner, has proven to be a powerful strategy for me. The support, continuous reflection and adjustment allow for steady progress toward achieving my aspirations within 3 buckets: 1) professional, 2) personal and 3) passion. How do you approach the new year? Do you make resolutions or take a different approach? Sound off in the comments. 👇

I stopped setting new year's resolutions several years ago, opting to instead keeping rolling goals and actionable intentions. Last year, I took that a step further by scheduling weekly meetings with an accountability buddy. We created an evolving goal-tracker that we use to set weekly, monthly and quarterly mini-goals (milestones) that roll up to our larger goals. Each week, we have a phone call to review how we did with achieving our weekly milestones, discuss any barriers that prevented us from achieving those milestones, set/adjust goals for the following week and provide each other with support and advice to help us realize those goals. I've found this to be a much more effective system for myself as it keeps my goals front and center and holds me accountable to accomplishing them. That said, I do look at the new year as a fresh start and opportunity to reflect upon lessons learned from the previous year. I use that fresh start to course correct, avoiding past mistakes, as well as to jump start progress for the new year. What's your take on new year's resolutions?

Well said. There will still be times when we all need to vent, get the frustration off our chests so we can move past it. Treat it like therapy by setting an allotted time and assigning a new path forward at the end of the b*tch session. The rest of the time, come up with a solution and advocate for it. If your solution isn't acceptable, make time to find one that is. Treat this as a career/personal growth exercise. Learn to ask for feedback to ensure the solutions you offer are acceptable to your leader and to the company's values and mission. As a leader, be prepared to offer alternate solutions or ask questions that will help someone learn how to come up with solutions themselves. Set guidelines for what is acceptable to move forward on without approval. Offer feedback. You can't be only a sounding board 100% of the time. You have to be prepared to lead and mentor too.
In honor of New Year's, here is my second favorite piece of advice. I can not help you get from the problem to the solution if I do not know what will make you feel the situation is resolved. So, I propose the following script. "I am having a problem with (PROBLEM). What I really need is for (them, the program, etc.) to (resolution). Do you have any advice, or can you help me?" There's a reason there is a "no whining" sign in my office. It's my daily reminder to address problems from a solution perspective. May your new year be filled with resolutions. Happy 2024.😊
