Did you know that by 2023, only 16.7% of professionals in the engineering field were women? Back in 1980, this number was just 5%. Interesting, right? (Source: Society of Women Engineers). Yesterday, June 23rd, was International Women in Engineering Day—a day to remember that anyone can study and work in fields they are passionate about 🌟 When we pursue our passions, give our best, collaborate in teams, and seize opportunities, we create the perfect environment for innovation to happen, bringing contributions that can revolutionize industries and the world :) And we, women do certainly bring unique and creative perspectives, ideas, and solutions to different challenges and contexts, even if it's a new area or field; we find a way, we don't give up, we try, we are eager to learn, we adapt, and we always look to grow. It’s also a day to celebrate the many achievements women have made in science over the years and to highlight the importance of encouraging girls to explore STEM fields, yess, even a short conversation can make a huge difference. Creating opportunities for girls to discover their passions in science is crucial! It's an honor to be an engineer and I'm grateful to have met and worked with talented, brave and wonderful female colleagues from around the world. Here is a picture of my Bachelor's Graduation in Industrial Engineering back in 2018, which coincidentally was on International Women’s Day, March 8th. Women in engineering are not only present in any industry and role they desire, but they also bring with them exceptional innovation, creativity, and leadership. - Globally, only 28% of engineers are women, according to UNESCO. - In Mexico, female participation in engineering is 24%, a percentage that continues to grow thanks to ongoing efforts to promote STEM education among girls and young women. - Women in leadership roles within engineering have been shown to increase profitability and productivity in their companies, according to studies by the Harvard Business Review. - Women engineers are leading innovative projects that are changing the world, from renewable energy to advanced medical technology. - Companies with gender-diverse engineering teams show significant improvement in problem-solving and creativity. The road ahead: - Although we have made progress, challenges remain. Women in engineering still earn 16% less than their male counterparts, according to the Society of Women Engineers. - It is essential to continue supporting and promoting STEM education for girls and young women, creating inclusive and fair work environments, and advocating for policies that ensure equal opportunities and pay. The STEM initiative first began in earnest in the early 2000s. Yet, even after two decades, the presence of women in engineering fields has not reached its full potential. When women step into engineering, they contribute to a broader viewpoint, enriching the field with their experiences and insights. They enable the design of more inclusive, diverse, and innovative solutions. Leaders play a key role in attracting, supporting and retaining women engineers. On Sunday, we celebrate International Women in Engineering Day. I am very happy that to mark this important day, the team behind ABB Review has put together a special report with a great collection of articles authored by women. I am hopeful that this special edition will encourage more women to consider a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). I am also delighted to have been given the opportunity to guest edit this special edition. I believe that increasing diversity in STEM education and careers is a crucial component of understanding the needs of customers and fosters innovation - clearly customers are diverse, and to fully support them we must understand their world. Engineering is like every other field, it is not reserved for one gender. If you like it, just go for it, you will be able to excel in it and to have a large variety of growth and career opportunities. Tomorrow's Engineers Week 2023 is aiming to help excite more young minds about engineering careers. We had the same aim when we invited young women from our local secondary school in June (for #INWED) to meet some of our engineers and find out about the profession. Here's what they said. #TEWeek23

The theme for this year, "Enhanced by Engineering," perfectly encapsulates how women have continuously enriched and advanced the engineering profession. Despite facing numerous challenges, including stereotypes and biases that suggest women are not good enough for engineering, we have persisted and thrived. Women in engineering have had to overcome significant hurdles. The male-dominated environment often questions our abilities, creating barriers that require immense resilience and determination to overcome. However, these struggles have only strengthened our resolve and highlighted our capabilities. Through hard work and perseverance, women engineers have achieved remarkable accomplishments. We have contributed to groundbreaking projects, driven innovation, and provided unique perspectives that have led to better, more inclusive engineering solutions. Our successes are not just individual victories but milestones that pave the way for future generations of women in engineering. Looking ahead, our dreams and aspirations remain as ambitious as ever. We aim to continue breaking barriers, inspiring young girls to pursue careers in STEM, and fostering an environment where gender does not dictate one's potential or opportunities. We envision a future where diversity and inclusion are the norms in engineering, enhancing the profession and benefiting society as a whole. 👩🔬 11th Feb each year is 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 Reflecting on my 15+ years in engineering as a woman, this day isn't just a celebration - it's a call to action for future generations to enter STEM-based roles, especially for women and girls.   Despite progress, challenges persist... As Jessica Pringle - an inspiring leader at Worley mentioned in her recent post, that the statistics speak volumes:   👉 Women hold only 12% of science academy seats. 👉 In AI, they're just 22% of the workforce. 👉 Despite tech demand, only 28% of engineering grads are women.   Jessica Pringle states: "Diversity in STEM isn't just about fairness or equality: it's about enriching the pool of talent, ideas, and innovations critical for addressing the world's most pressing challenges, from climate change to technological advancement." I couldn't agree more! As chairperson for Wise Professional Network (since 2020), I have been an advocate for, and believe in our mission to 𝗔𝘁𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁, 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻, 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲 women in STEM. Together, we can create an inclusive future where everyone thrives. Today is World STEM/STEAM Day. As a woman business owner and leader, I'm thrilled to mark National STEM/STEAM Day and shine a spotlight on the crucial role STEM plays in modern manufacturing. 💪🌐 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) isn't just a set of academic disciplines; it's the backbone of innovation and progress across industries. In manufacturing, it's the driving force behind the processes and products that shape our world. From robotics and automation to data analytics and supply chain management, STEM skills are at the heart of every aspect of manufacturing. They enable us to streamline operations, enhance quality, and reduce environmental impact. But here's the twist: STEM in manufacturing isn't limited by gender. It's an open field where women can, and should, make their mark. Today, I want to celebrate the countless women engineers, scientists, and leaders who have broken barriers and continue to drive change in our industry. At the same time, we must encourage more young women to explore STEM fields and consider a career in manufacturing. A world of opportunity is waiting here, where creativity and technical expertise converge to create real-world solutions. Manufacturing isn't just about machines; it's about people and their capacity to innovate, adapt, and solve complex problems. It's about teamwork and collaboration across diverse skill sets. Well #INWED2024 is fast approaching in #June and I was delighted to be asked by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) to give my thoughts on how to get more #womenintoengineering. The statistics are stark if you look at pure engineering and technology roles where women make up only 16.5% of the UK workforce however ever the optimist, this has grown significantly over the last 10 years. I know from my own university course experience in #chemicalengineering we have increased the number of women from about 1% in the 1970s to around 35% today on a cohort that is 5x larger! The other positive note is increased diversity with many coming from backgrounds that would never have considered careers in engineering before. This is great news for a sector that badly needs more talent particularly as we navigate the road to #netzero through the #energytransition. What has become even more important is to fill and retain the pipeline of talent through to senior and executive roles, the so called "#missingmiddle". There are a number of reasons which we allude to in the article and these need addressing. I particularly focus on the role of senior/executive management in making this happen. After all, if I am an employee and my seniors don't #walkthetalk, then why should I? The role of #allyship is key. Anyone can be an ally or support to anyone. It just needs you to stand up, be counted and get on and support with whatever expertise, ability and influence you have. "I would encourage all men reading this article to put their heads above the parapet and #courageously embrace #allyship to #thoseinneed in their organisations and beyond."
