🏳️🌈 As Pride Month approaches, I find myself reflecting on the concept of rainbow washing and its impact on LGBTQ+ communities in India. Over the years, I've witnessed corporations embracing rainbow flags and changing their logos to show support during Pride Month. While this visibility is important, it often feels performative without substantive action behind it. In India, where LGBTQ+ rights still face significant challenges, it's crucial for corporations to move beyond surface-level gestures and actively advocate for change. This means implementing inclusive policies, fostering diverse workplaces, and supporting LGBTQ+ organizations and causes year-round. As someone who has experienced the effects of rainbow washing firsthand, I urge corporations to prioritize authenticity and accountability in their allyship efforts. Yesterday was Spirit Day. Spirit Day was created to stand against bullying and to show support for LGBTQ+ youth. As PRIDE leaders at Sodexo USA, we recognize the importance of using our voices and being visible. Bullying is intersectional and has no place in schools or at work. According to The Trevor Project, the majority of LGBTQ youth (52%) who were enrolled in middle or high school reported being bullied either in person or electronically in the past year. One in three (33%) reported being bullied in-person (e.g., at school, on the way to school, at a party, or at work), while 42% were bullied electronically (e.g., online or via text message). Bullying was reported more often by LGBTQ middle school (65%) compared to high school students (49%). Transgender and nonbinary students (61%) reported higher rates of bullying compared to cisgender LGBQ students (45%). Those who were Native/Indigenous (70%), white (54%), and multiracial (54%) reported higher rates of being bullied compared to those who were Latinx (47%), Asian American/Pacific Islander (41%), or Black (41%).
