#Throwback to our project for Skinner Montessori in Vancouver, WA! A secure “U” configuration was created for the school, installing the buildings with a singular administrative checkpoint and coded entry before classroom access. Setting the structures to grade level made the exterior more aesthetically appealing and increased the sense of permanence. ADA ramps, landings, and stairs were eliminated by pouring concrete walkways right up to the entries for easy access into the buildings. Interconnecting the three building roofs also created space above the ceiling. That space was used for routing sprinkler piping, fire/security alarm systems, and phone/data systems without having to go underground at higher costs. Utilizing modular construction saved the school time by allowing for a quick move-in and saving on expenses by increasing facility flexibility. ESSENTIAL EXTERNAL WORKS COMPLETED Last week essential extensive external works were completed for Surrey County Council at Philip Southcote School Sixth Form Centre, ahead of the start of the new school year. Working in collaboration with Surrey County Council, Pellings, GDC partnership and Pi Consultants, MCS was appointed to carry out extensive external works adjacent to The Meads building, which is home to the Philip Southcote School Sixth Form Centre. These works involved the complete transformation of an overgrown field into: a useful recreational area for its Further Education curriculum, formation of additional car parking spaces to an existing car park, a minibus drop off area, creating overflow parking and fencing on nearby land adjacent to Chertsey Fire and Rescue Station. Initial works involved carrying out a reduced level dig to establish a flat foundation, under the supervised ‘Watching Brief’ of Fisher German LLP, to ensure that the works did not penetrate Esso’s Southampton to London Aviation Fuel Pipeline. At this stage two attenuation tanks were positioned to reduce surface water levels and power ducts were installed to feed the lighting, access control and two Electric Vehicle (EV) charge points. Following this, ground build up with Type 1 commenced up to underside of tarmac levels, foundations for two canopies were created, then tarmac base and wearing course, kerbs, edgings were laid and lining marked for finishes. Today the area has been completely transformed and now features 14 car parking spaces, a defined minibus hardstanding parking area on grasscrete, EV charge points, decorative permeable resin and artificial grass within the recreation area, seating area, two Langley design canopies, new trees and shrubs. #construction #Refurbishment #constructionUK #constructionNews #LoveConstruction #SurreyCC #Surrey #PhilipSouthcoteSchool

The New York City skyline is dotted with a large number of wooden water tanks perched atop buildings, each holding up to 10,000 gallons of water. These towers have been built and maintained by three family-run businesses for over 100 years. Settlers were originally drawn to the New York area for its rich waterways, however as industry grew in the 1800s, so did the grime and unsanitary conditions. In 1864, The Citizens Association of New York, started by a group of wealthy New Yorker's, embarked on a mission to improve these conditions. Access to fresh, clean water was, of course, important to this mission. In 1870, the Department of Public Works was tasked with improving drainage systems. Then, with the addition of indoor plumbing in the 1880s, water storage tanks began dotting the skyline. Naturally, this gravity fed water gains enough momentum to rise 6 stories. Taller buildings, however, require a water tower to provide ample water pressure for New Yorker's living in floors 7 and above to enjoy life's simple pleasures like flushing a toilet, showering or brushing their teeth. You'll find these iconic structures proudly seated atop buildings throughout New York. The towers last approximately 30-35 years and can be built within 24 hours. And, surprisingly, it only takes a few hours to fill them with up to 10,000 gallons of water. The water tanks operate similar to a simple toilet. When the water level recedes, a float valve automatically allows more water in, refilling the tank. A pump is used to pump water into the tank. It can then be disbursed within the building. The towers are made from untreated wood, so as not to pollute the water they hold. Three family-run companies have been instrumental in building and maintaining New York water towers for the past century; Rosenwach Tank Company, Isseks Brothers, and American Pipe and Tank who has been building and maintaining these structures in New York for over four generations.

Kids at school need supervision. But facades shouldn’t. Let me tell you a story. I had a visit last week with a school board’s construction team. The head of their team laid out their challenges for me. Their big problem was this: How to find new options for facades — facades that really bring their school buildings to life. He said to me, almost verbatim: “We have massive challenges making INTERESTING schools — with affordable and zero-maintenance facades — in contracted summer construction schedules.” Music to my ears.
