📣 Alumni Spotlight Meet Thomas Beaucham, CPA - City of Jacksonville Public Accounts Auditor. Thomas graduated from UNF with his MACC in 2020. - As a working professional, what advice would you give incoming students? Make time to meet people. Opportunities to learn how to be part of a team can help develop the skills that will carry you beyond graduation. While good grades are a strong factor in getting hired, they hardly matter after that since your coworkers will have met the same requirements. You will stand out more for being a team player who asks questions and takes initiative to apply what you are taught. After class, I was in Student Government and later Beta Alpha Psi. Both allowed me to meet new people, help my community, learn how to achieve goals as part of a team and develop an appreciation for diverse perspectives. Also, serving both created lasting memories and a deeper connection to my alma mater. - What drew you to choose the UNF program for your graduate studies? My primary motivation for obtaining my master's was to satisfy the education requirements for my CPA license. However, I chose to stay at UNF since I had already established meaningful connections with accounting professors and students through Beta Alpha Psi. We started the chapter towards the end of my undergraduate studies, and I wanted to stay until it became self-sustaining. As a result, the chapter has cultivated leaders and become a powerful resource for students. - The biggest takeaway? Don't let your time at UNF be spent solely in the classroom. This is the time to try new things, meet people, and see what the university has to offer. Even if your time is limited by work and family, find the time for just one student organization. When students band together for a common purpose, even a small contribution of time can make great changes possible! An initiative that benefits one more student makes it that much more worthwhile. And when leaders see that impact, it can motivate them to keep working hard. What made me proud to lead Student Government and Beta Alpha Psi was seeing how many students benefited from their programs. Sometimes, just showing up is enough. - Can you share some key milestones in your career since graduating from UNF? I passed the CPA exam sections on my first try, thanks to the instruction of the excellent faculty at UNF. This year, I began to help lead Jacksonville men to form a new chapter of the philanthropic organization Grapevine (there was already a chapter just for women). It creates an opportunity for professionals to expand their network and give to local charities. Also, I plan to apply to law school soon. They engaged with students on topics such as professionalism, navigating audit environments, and making the transition into the workplace. Alumnus Aman Lidder, MAcc is busy putting his Saint Martin's Master of Accountancy (MAcc) degree to use working at a local accounting and tax firm, supporting his family’s business, and creating a new nonprofit. At the same time, he is preparing to take the CPA exam because the MAcc program satisfies the 150 college credits required to qualify for licensure. 🔍 The 150-hour college credit requirement for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) qualification is being questioned as outdated and inequitable by Guylaine Saint Juste, President & CEO of the National Association of Black Accountants, Inc. (NABA). The requirement, introduced in the 1980s, has not adequately considered the impact on underrepresented groups, particularly Black and African American professionals. With only 2% of CPAs identifying as Black, Saint Juste highlights the need for more accessible pathways to CPA licensure that account for diverse backgrounds and challenges. She suggests looking at innovative models and alternative routes, similar to the tech industry, to make the profession more inclusive and equitable.
