This maybe be an unpopular opinion but am I one of the few that’s pretty revolted by the materialistic Barbie-pink-hype spreading across every corner of our earth? In a period of time where we are fighting serious climate issues (Greece and Italy in total chaos because of fires and storms) - why are we celebrating this wasteful, plastic world which does nothing but create more plastic landfill? I just don’t get it. Is it escapism gone mad? Is it head-in-the-pink sand consumerism? Barbie was slowly dying but sadly she’s come back with vengeance selling 100 dolls every minute… is this what we all need? And why on earth did we actually run out of the colour pink? I didn’t even know that was possible… they can masquerade Barbie as a female icon with all her amazing buddies, with a film being created by a female producer… but let’s be real, it’s not about that, it’s about Mattel selling more dolls, more merch and more plastic. They focused on what will sell more and blindly everyone’s being suckered in. Looking forward to reading The GANNI Playbook next month. When the fashion landscape falls short on accountability, Ganni is committed to acting responsibly, authenticity and where possible, sustainability. For example their goal of using 90% of preferred materials by 2025 is ambitious and inspiring, citing cancelling colours of a best seller until a suitable replacement material is found. Hoping their actions and shared learnings will inspire action as they ‘demonstrate the principles of a responsible business, where greater purpose co-exists with financial ambition’. There is also something special about GANNI creativity, where pieces are worn season after season and always pass the ‘Does this spark joy?’ test at every wardrobe edit! I watched a documentary about the fast fashion brand Brandy Melville the other day. It was fascinating. I knew fast fashion was harmful, but I had no idea to what extent! The documentary was mostly about how evil the company is in general - racist, sexist, and exploitative. But, beyond that, fast fashion's impact on the environment is truly frightening. The documentary showed several clips of the oceans in Ghana - the country that most western nations choose to exploit. They force them to buy our discarded cheap junk-clothes, which they then have to figure out how to dispose of. A lot of it ends up in the oceans. Western nations don't care because it's not "their" beach that looks like a landfill. But the ignorant thing, of course, is that there is no "their" beach. The quality of the world's oceans affects OUR marine life and the climate of the whole world, not just a portion of it. The most important take-away for me is that what we purchase is a moral decision. It is as important as voting - maybe more so. The shenanigans of corporations affect our daily lives more directly than the convoluted inefficiencies of the government. Also, the two are linked. Corporate leaders buy the politicians with their contributions. Therefore, immoral corporations lead to immoral governments. Regular people have the numbers, but the corporations have the money. Money is the only language spoken by the powers that be. But we can use our collective numbers to counter this - as long as we resist laziness and apathy. It is easy to get overwhelmed, and feel like there's nothing we can do about the world's problems. But there is something we can do. Every time we shop, we can shop with our conscience. Support high-quality small businesses, local artisans, and ethical corporations. Withdraw your support, as much as possible, from the rest. Thanks to everyone for all your support and kind words backing my new sustainable business STUART TREVOR Primarily repurposing vintage clothing, reimagining, upcycling, hand painting, beading, embroidery and printing etc This is just the beginning STUART TREVOR will in the future launch a 100% GOTS certified organic cotton collection of sportswear NIKE, Adidas, Under Armour, Gymshark and Lululemon etc have been going ballistic in the last few years yet they’re predominantly focused on polyester clothing Sportswear made from polyester is not only bad for the environment it’s also really bad for human beings People are allergic to polyester - it’s made from plastic, a derivative of the oil and gas industry, our bodies do not need these harmful chemicals next to our skin It doesn’t “wick away sweat” these garments need extra chemicals to cover up body odour It’s a huge lie, the only thing that makes sense is that it’s cheaper and easier to mass produce The only reason we believe that it’s better is it is marketed as the best option for activewear, dries quicker than natural organic materials and that’s absolutely ridiculous Natural organic materials such as cotton and merino wool are the very best choice for activewear POLYESTER IS KILLING THE PLANET - BOOM 💥
