The 4th of July serves as a reminder to ensure our veteran employees feel supported and heard. Ongoing education and training are some ways we continually invest in our team members, but we also offer employee resource groups for people who share unique backgrounds and seek further engagement with their teammates.
Our Veterans Employee Resource Group (VERG) is an important program for our organization and focuses on recruiting, retaining, and advocating for the growth and awareness of service members within our organization.
Jennifer is a veteran, project manager for our subsidiary The L.E. Myers Co., and board member of VERG who believes MYR Group is a great place for veterans to advance their career alongside others who share the same sense of integrity, responsibility, and perseverance.

One of the cool passion projects that I got to do at Hire Heroes USA was employer training. As a non-veteran working at a military nonprofit, I found myself advocating for veterans and promoting their transferable skills and experiences to partners and nonveteran friends. We needed a sweet and simple training that could kickstart their personal learning and discovery. There’s so much content out there, and unfortunately, it's easier to remember stereotypes.
LinkedIn is one of my corporate partners (Cory Boatwright). What I love about them is that they published the Veteran Opportunity Report based on data. They published a 2023 report which addresses some common misconceptions about veterans. I love it!
The myth that still lingers around, and I want to put it to rest, is about turnover. The myth is that 50% of veterans leave their first civilian job within 6 months of employment. <Buzz>…That is incorrect! In the Veteran Opportunity Report 2023, “Veterans are 27% less likely to leave” compared to their nonveteran counterparts.
Retention is a common issue among companies that approach us. Based on this, doesn’t it make sense to hire a veteran?

“Veterans with degrees may be at a disadvantage because of their military service, more so than someone with no work experience at all.”
This is unacceptable.
According to a recent LinkedIn Veteran Opportunity Report, veterans with bachelor’s degrees “enter the corporate workforce with 2.9x more total work experience” than nonveterans with the same level of education.
And yet, they’re not being paid the same as nonveterans.
Believe it or not, most veterans take a step down in seniority when they are onboarding. This is because they are more than qualified for the job.
Veterans are just looking for work that gives them opportunities for growth, longevity, and success–just like the rest of us.
They are our leaders throughout our communities, and yet, they struggle to be taken seriously in the workforce.
It’s our responsibility to step up and fix the wage gap between civilians and veterans. It’s our job to connect vets to meaningful employment opportunities. Their sacrifices have created our opportunities.
We need to change the way we view vets.
We are not walking PTSD cases with a penchant for fighting.
Veterans are assets, victims. We are not broken.
There is still work to be done.

As Veterans Day approaches, I want to express my sincere gratitude and thanks to all who have served our Country. 🙏
I came across an inspiring article that highlights how Veterans, with their unique skills, can play a crucial role in addressing the skills gap in our workforce. 🛠️
The article discusses the challenges some Veterans face in transitioning to skilled trades jobs and the importance of recognizing and valuing their skills in the civilian workforce.
🤝 Let's take a moment to thank our Veterans. I also encourage everyone to recognize the transferable skills of our Veterans. 🌐 Check out the full article

During my first post-military interview, I was asked about how well I worked with people from other countries and cultures. I laughed (hopefully inside) and said I had just spent my previous years with people from every corner of this country AND many from overseas. The melting pot you experience in the military is astounding.
As for leadership experience, it is learned, and practiced, at ALL levels of the military. Not just the commissioned officers running an installation or a large organization, but the non-commissioned officers running functional area or work center, and the “junior enlisted” folks start being team leaders and mentors in no time. After they are no longer the “freshest meat” on the team, they are already on the path to leadership.
THESE are the skills employers want! Someone who will not just wait to be told what to do, but will ensure the mission’s goal is perpetually being attained for the long haul.
And for the “years of experience” that you gain from a civilian job, it is a 9-5 (plus a little more) of time, but the work struggles stay separated. However, your situation in the military can span from being at your home station to being deployed in a combat zone. The responsibilities for your team include many additional areas like: staffing 24/7, managing professional and personal conflicts, cultivating your team for skills proficiency, ongoing education, and career advancement.
Civilian companies CAN do some of this, but it’s not part of their fiber. A military member can be ejected for any number of reasons, but rehabilitation is a higher priority before removal.

🪖🎖️Serving Those Who Served!🎖️🪖
Just a day into this year's National Association of State Workforce Agencies conference I'm reminded of all the #opportunities and #resources that exist for the veteran community and if, the big if, #veterans and #militaryspouses were more aware of them the greater their chances at success after service would be.
When I left the service it was Hire Heroes USA who helped me find my next mission. I struggled at times, I found success at times but I couldn't have done it alone.
Just when I thought I couldn't be any more dedicated to the work I do, I am even more so after hearing Kimberly Mitchell's story and listening to the wisdom Lida Citroën shared (see link below) and we're just getting started. Elena C. and I are excited for what’s to come!
Veterans possess an incredible skill set, from leadership and discipline to problem-solving and adaptability. Yet, many face unique challenges when reintegrating into civilian society. Let's be the bridge that helps them navigate these hurdles, providing them with opportunities for meaningful careers and fulfilling life beyond their military service.
By offering mentorship, job training, and networking opportunities, we can empower veterans to leverage their experiences and talents in the civilian workforce. Let's connect them with employers who recognize the value of their military background and are eager to welcome them onto their teams.
At the same time, let's also acknowledge that some veterans may need additional support, whether it's dealing with physical or mental health challenges. By investing in resources and programs, we can ensure that our heroes have access to the care they deserve.
Together, we can create a community where veterans feel appreciated and empowered, where they're not given a handout, but a hand up to reach their full potential.
