We are pleased to share that our project at #Penhallow, Cornwall, has been granted planning permission to develop one of the four #geothermal plants in the area by our client @Geothermal Engineering Ltd. (GEL). The project is expected to be completed in 2025 and, in combination with the other two sites from GEL, will be able to power over 35,000 homes. Geothermal energy is one of the lowest-emission energy sources available. Its ability to provide base load power, therefore reducing the reliance on fossil fuel-based power plants, typically requires less land area compared to other renewable energy sources such as Solar and Wind farms. As a result, it can reduce habitat disruption and preserve ecosystems and biodiversity. At @wardellarmstrong, we have worked closely with the client and planning officers to deliver landscape planning strategy, ensure that the development pose least #visual impact to the local #stakeholder and #landscape impact to the surrounding environment. Landscape feature such as #hedgerow play a crucial role as it can create a buffer zone for the development and reduce visual impact for sensitive receptors. It has been great working alongside the GEL team. A special thank you to Case Officer Tim Warne and Service Director Louise Wood for their collaborative approach throughout the planning process. Planning permission granted for a 49.9MW battery storage (BESS) project, the first in Inverclyde! 🔋Sustainability Unlimited LLP successfully secured consent on behalf of the Big Battery Company for this essential renewable energy infrastructure. Despite the Green Belt location, Inverclyde Council 👍 recognised the benefits for supporting renewables and reducing emissions. Huge thanks to the fantastic Inverclyde planning officers, committee members, and consultees for their pragmatic approach! 🙏 Landscape, ecology, transport and other impacts will be carefully managed to ensure a positive legacy for the 40-year lifespan. This decision shows Green Belts aren't always off-limits for well-sited storage projects enabling the energy transition. Excited to drive this forward! ☀ Exciting News! Last night's Town of Middletown, DE monthly meeting marked a pivotal moment as council voted to advance the 𝗠𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿 project! This groundbreaking initiative entails the construction of a 3-megawatt solar array, ingeniously floating atop one of the town's wastewater ponds. This project is also set to become Delaware's inaugural floating solar endeavor. The Ohio Power Siting Board (OPSB) has granted approval for Oak Run Solar, marking it as the largest #solarpower generation facility authorized in #Ohio to date. With plans for 800 megawatts of solar generation and a 300 megawatt #batteryenergystorage system, the project signifies a significant stride towards reducing #greenhousegasemissions in the state. The Ohio Environmental Council (OEC), an intervening party in the case, played a crucial role in advocating for Oak Run Solar’s approval. Expert testimony from Dr. Jeffrey Reutter, retired director of The Ohio State University’s Ohio Sea Grant College Program and Stone Lab, emphasized the project’s benefits in mitigating #climatechange and addressing harmful stormwater runoff. Excerpt from the January 2024 Town Journal: LED Streetlights Installed by the Chair of the Environment Committee In accordance with our Town’s pledge to reduce our carbon footprint, the Town has begun installing LED streetlights. This process has taken over 25 years to come to fruition, but yes, we have finally reached that day! This installation process involves three separate Pepco work orders, with the first completed just recently on Dorset and Cumberland Avenues. I spoke with a Pepco employee on the street during the installation and he told me that each light takes about six minutes to install – wow! The new lights use relatively warm 3000 Kelvin, 50W equivalent LED bulbs, which project about the same amount of luminescence as our old streetlights, but with more focused direction down toward the streets and less into your windows. That’s a good thing for residents and for nearby birds and animals trying to sleep or hunt at night. These new bulbs will reduce our energy consumption by about 80%. That’s huge! The next two phases will occur over the coming months. Also, keep in mind that all of our Town’s electricity uses a third-party renewable energy source, an option that every resident has with their Pepco bill. Saint Meinrad Archabbey in rural Indiana has taken significant steps to reduce energy costs and consumption in pursuit of self-sufficiency and reducing negative impacts on the earth. In partnership with Energy Service Company Veregy and financer D.A. Davidson Companies, they're beginning phase two of a Guaranteed Energy Savings Performance Contract (GESPC). Upon completion, Saint Meinrad will generate enough on-site electricity to reduce purchased electricity by 59% and natural gas consumption by 32%. #Solar developer friends, I'm seeking your thoughts on this... As a service provider to cleantech companies, it behooves me to take a "big tent" approach that cheers on varying – even semi-competing – forms of clean energy advancements. Yes, it's better for business. But I also don't have the technical expertise in engineering, logistics, etc. to enable well-formed views on clean economy topics beyond what public communications touches. That's why I'm interested in getting reactions from friends in both C&I and utility-scale solar development to this argument from Jonathan Thompson in High Country News: We'd do better as a society putting solar panels on the roofs of all +21K big box stores before building utility-scale solar farms in environmentally sensitive areas. As 2024 dawns and the legislative session begins, Maryland seeks to meet aggressive renewable energy goals, while continuing to make progress on land conservation. Estimates vary widely, but these goals seem likely to require between 10,000 and 20,000 acres of ground-mounted solar on agricultural fields. One can imagine the majority of those acres — and perhaps the vast majority — could fall on Eastern Shore farmland, unless steps to ensure regional equity are taken. This is why, as legislators prepare to gather and address the business of the state, ESLC is advocating for a few priority policies related to solar siting: ✔ Commercial solar development should never be allowed on state-held or co-held conservation easements. ✔ Solar siting should be prioritized for the built environment, like warehouses and parking lots, before losing some of the most productive soil in the world. ✔ For every acre taken out of production for solar development, solar companies should be paying a mitigation fee to conserve lands via permanent easement elsewhere. ✔ Policies should be enacted to ensure Maryland’s Eastern Shore counties aren’t expected to bear a disproportionate burden of solar development in the coming years.
