What I've learnt from judging awards Recently, I chaired judging the Asia Pacific Stevie Awards in a couple of categories, and here's my takeaways: ⭐ Proof is key: Surprisingly, many entrants didn't provide attachments to back up their claims. Adding evidence strengthens your case and boosts credibility. ⭐ Show me the money: Whether it's percentage increases or actual dollar figures, seeing the growth adds a whole new level of clarity to your success story. ⭐ Answer the question: If asked about the innovation behind a strategy, it's crucial to be crystal clear about what sets it apart. Don't beat around the bush, highlight exactly what makes your approach unique and innovative. ⭐ Keep it simple: Don't drown your entry with unnecessary jargon or repeat yourself. Bullet points are your friend - make it easy to understand and engage with your message. ⭐ Attention-grabbing title: Give your entry a title that demands attention, whether catchy or a thought-provoking question. Make sure it hooks your audience right off the bat. ⭐ By the way, did you know China's big into art exhibitions? Their mall culture is next level, with tons of captivating displays—it's a whole scene. Have you judged awards or entered any? #steviesawards

I drive growth for associations, nonprofits, and SMBs through strategic marketing leadership, captivating content, and integrated digital campaigns.
The 2024 #Oscar nominations just dropped, and I’m not going to lie: as a cinephile, I look forward to this day every year. And every year, I make it a goal to watch all the nominated films. I've ticked off a few so far, but still have quite a bit of ground to cover before the Academy rolls out the red carpet next month. As a lifelong communicator and someone who's been in the #marketing game for a (long) while, today’s announcement has got me thinking: these films are the best of the best in Hollywood, but they’re not just about entertainment; they're masterclasses in creating captivating narratives, sparking emotions, and gripping audiences around the world. It strikes me how similar this is to what we do in marketing, albeit on a less glamorous stage. We weave narratives, evoke emotions, and strive to connect deeply with our audience. So, here's a thought: If films like ‘Oppenheimer,’ ‘Barbie,’ ‘Poor Things,’ or my personal favorites (so far), ‘Rustin,’ and 'The Holdovers' can captivate global audiences, what can we, as marketers, learn from the way these filmmakers bring a story to life? Maybe it's the art of building suspense that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats or the way they bring to life characters (read: brands) that audiences want to root for? Which Oscar-nominated film do you think really nails it when it comes to storytelling?
The Academy unveiled nominations for the upcoming 96th Oscars Tuesday morning. https://trib.al/3alOQHF

From Dance Floors to Boardrooms Looking back on my journey with Jubile Latino (The First Latin Dance Team at Stony Brook University), I've come to realize just how much I've learned about leadership. When I first joined as a regular member the idea of leading others seemed like a distant reality. It was intimidating, especially since I had never been in a leadership role before. But as I gained the trust and confidence of my peers, I found myself stepping up to the challenge. Stepping into the role of President, I encountered one of the most significant challenges of my term which was adjusting to the arrival of new team members. As a leader, it can be tough to accept new ideas and viewpoints because it means being open to change while also trying to keep the team together. I quickly realized that embracing these new ideas and incorporating them into our routines was essential for our growth and success. Each person brought with them fresh ideas and perspectives that could benefit our team. It taught me the importance of staying open-minded and flexible as a leader, always ready to embrace change for the betterment of the team. Leading a team where most members were older than me presented its own set of challenges. I had to prove myself and earn their respect through my actions and dedication to our shared goals. Building credibility and showing competence were crucial in overcoming any initial doubts or resistance. But as we focused on our common purpose and worked together towards our vision, age soon became irrelevant. Building a strong bond with the team was key because it created a supportive environment where everyone felt valued and motivated to work together towards our goal. We spent countless hours practicing together, hanging out after performances, and going on late-night food runs, ultimately fostering a sense of unity. This closeness translated into our performances on the dance floor, where we seamlessly synchronized our movements and showcased our chemistry to the judges and audience. We were thrilled to achieve first place in a competition among Latin dance teams from colleges and universities across New York. As I moved beyond the dance floor, I carry these lessons with me. Leadership is not just about authority. It's about inspiring others, empowering them, and nurturing their potential. The connections we were able to forge as a team will have a profound impact, no matter where our journey takes us. May Jubile Latino continue to soar and thrive! #LeadershipJourney #LeadershipDevelopment #Teamwork #TeamBuilding #PersonalGrowth

A day or so in London, this time for the Events industry, Cross Association, DEI Working Group. People in the events world never cease to amaze me. How they can be unfazed by challenges, and deal with them with a confident smile and a plan almost as if the unexpected is expected. The fact that that it was also the first day for Catherine Beck as Chair of a large industry cross networking group when the main speaker is suddenly unable to attend, demonstrates not only her resourcefulness, but also that in their world there is no translation for the word crisis! There was so much to glean from the meeting. This is an industry going through change and it means doing something we focus on a lot in Mindsmith Thinking, changing perspective. It was great to hear how companies were improving, staffing to address the effects of the long hours culture, the way age and experience are viewed, and continuing to push the boundaries with flexible working and paternity leave. All necessary steps in an industry that has to be creatively focused on outcomes, but having a growing realisation that people organisations are having to become equally creative with the talent that produces them. The Chair concluded with the clarion call for "less talk, more action". This is a group where things will happen, in an industry in need of the ideas and support. A really productive meeting hosted at the New Scientist Building and thanks to the AEO Association of Event Organisers and ESSA team for making the arrangements.
Thank you to our Cross Association HR and DEI working groups for an insightful combined session yesterday. Our exploration into age diversity was fascinating and eye opening. Appreciation to Jacqui McCarron and Georgia Hill for generously hosting us at the New Scientist. Catherine Beck Mike S. Katrina Rowbury, MCIPD Jessica B. AEO Association of Event Organisers ESSA

Chances are, you may not have thought about Age Discrimination..? I hadn't either until recently, it seems the older I get, the more I become aware of my own unconscious biases towards getting older. This was my first time chairing our DEI group, and I really want to drive actions from conversation, so here are my take aways... One of the many things we discussed was how people (particularly younger people!) are less likely to recruit older people. For me, I certainly recognised this in myself when I recruited for a role in my 20s. Upon reflection, I think I felt threatened and wouldn't know how to manage/lead someone with more experience. My own insecurities could have got in the way of someone else's opportunity. I've been doing some self-reflection, and have so far committed to the below as a starting point: 1. Stop looking at the education section of CVs to gauge how old a candidate is...age is not an indication of maturity Catherine! 🤦🏽♀️ 2. If I find myself interviewing someone older than me, don't be threatened by it. Different experiences make strong teams (you should know this by now Catherine!)💪🏽 3. Be age inclusive: recruit from all age groups, create an environment for shared learning, plus identity and support issues specific to older workers 👌🏽 4. Use age inclusive language: older and younger. No need for anything else 🗣 Thank you again to everyone involved! I'm already looking forward to the next 🙌🏽 #OneChange AEV Association of Event Venues Ltd AEO Association of Event Organisers ESSA

After taking a break from social media over the summer, I'm back with the weekly Nice Guy and Gal Awards. I'd love your support to get these back up and running. Every Friday, I’ll share nominations for people who have been identified as nice guys (and gals). If you want to nominate someone, just shoot me a private message by 5:00 EDT on Thursday. There are only 3 requirements: 1) you have to be connected to the person you nominate 2) you can only nominate one person per week 3) you can’t nominate yourself 😀 If you want to provide a brief reason for your selection, that’s great, but it’s not a requirement. Let’s recognize people who make a difference simply by being nice. Have a great day, everyone. And now that we're on the other side of summer, have a great fall, too! https://lnkd.in/gYpYJvu #network #sportsbiz #people #niceguy #networking #sportsmarketing
