Is there a bigger summer winner than the #barbiemovie? It drove massive visit growth to theaters - AMC Theatres and Regal Cinemas saw some of their strongest months for visits since the start of 2017 - and topped the list of summer zeitgeisty topics alongside the like of Taylor Swift. And the key point might be that it was the movies themselves - add Oppenheimer and others to the mix here - that really drove the buzz. This is important because it acknowledges the fundamental truth of theater potential - it depends on the content. I'm continually intrigued when I come across pitch decks that lay out an ambitious go-to-market strategy including a wide release in theaters. It prompts me to inquire of the presenter, "Who exactly is planning to release this to hundreds of theaters?" Often, I receive blank stares in response, as they appear to be unaware of the logistical challenges involved and the likelihood that such a widespread release may not be feasible.

I keep reading the phrase "in selected theaters," and I really find it quite amusing. It's often a euphemism for a very limited release, but it’s framed to sound prestigious. Despite this, such minimal, ineffective theatrical releases often result in significant costs for investors, who are enticed by distributors with the "we are going theatrical" dream. At the same time, distributors inflate these limited releases with costs that are then cross-collateralized with digital distribution revenues, ultimately channeling most of the earnings to the distribution side. Is it really necessary to go to theaters with these limited releases?
