Have you seen the new #nature documentary Our Living World? We saw the first episode last night and I was impressed. Of course, I never met a nature documentary I didn’t like. I love animals, and David Attenborough’s voice reminds me of my Gran. But Our Living World offers a new take on the traditional wildlife footage: —> We are all connected in a delicate web of life. For example, a herd of reindeer grazing in the Arctic Circle are critical keepers of our life-sustaining climate. Why? 🦌 The reindeer eat the grass, keeping it short. ❄️ The short grass allows the falling snow to settle in an even blanket. 🐺 Wolves and other predators chase the reindeer, moving them over a wider area. ❄️ The result is an even, uninterrupted blanket of snow, stretching for thousands of miles… —> Which serves as a sun-reflecting mirror, keeping our planet cool. And then Cate Blanchett goes on to explain how cold climates at the poles form ocean currents which in turn cause the rains in Africa…. And so on. This interconnectivity is why it is critically important to protect wildlife and their ecosystems. Damage to one is damage to us all. With this in mind, although it’s a small step, I am so pleased to see Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) grow in popularity, especially in the corporate world. For those unfamiliar, NbS are actions to address societal challenges through the protection, sustainable management, and restoration of ecosystems. In this emerging field, corporations have begun to assess their impacts and dependencies on nature, in their own operations and in their supply chains. The idea is to use these assessments to reduce impacts, mitigate risks and, ideally, restore damaged ecosystems. I’m especially excited to see the long term impact of an applied nature lens on global supply chains. What companies come to mind when you think of NbS? * #naturebasedsolutions #nbs #sustainability #biodiversity

🗺 Is mass tourism an irreversible and damaging trend? Catch up with this morning’s interview at Radio InBlu2000 – the broadcaster of the Episcopal Conference of Italy – between Chiara Placenti and our CEO Filippo Addarii, who discussed the recent protests in the Canary Islands and shared his insight on the future of sustainable tourism. In spite of the social and environmental risks of mass tourism, the picture is brighter than it looks. The growing focus by institutional investors and banks on sustainable assets and the growth of eco-tourism is leading a wider adoption of ESG criteria in the industry’s value chain. This is what our project in the Maldives, in collaboration with international organisations and government agencies, aims to achieve. By setting up the first framework for sustainability parameters for Maldivian listed companies, we are creating a systemic effect that will lead to adoption by all their suppliers and open the door for implementation in other sectors, starting with tourism. Sustainability is no longer an option: it is a necessity for the future of the industry. You can listen to the full interview (in Italian) at the following link: https://lnkd.in/dRzi4s3k #SustainableTourism #ESG #ImpactInvesting #Ecotourism #Innovation #Maldives
