We are thrilled to announce that Survivor Friendly is joining Duke's Survivorship Week, an event dedicated to celebrating and supporting cancer survivors. This collaboration aims to raise awareness about survivors' unique challenges and the resources available to them.
One critical aspect of survivorship is understanding the healthcare rights and protections in place for survivors. The Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA) of 1998 is a pivotal piece of legislation. Under the WHCRA, group health plans, insurance companies, and HMOs offering mastectomy coverage must also cover:
- Reconstruction of the breast on which the mastectomy was performed
- Surgery and reconstruction of the other breast to produce a symmetrical appearance
- Prostheses
- Treatment of physical complications at all stages of the mastectomy, including lymphedema
These benefits apply to the individual's life, ensuring long-term support and care. Understanding and accessing these rights can significantly enhance the quality of life for survivors.
At Survivor Friendly, we educate and advocate for survivors, ensuring they know their rights and the support available. Join us during Dujes Survivorship Week as we host informative sessions, survivor stories, and resource sharing to empower and uplift the survivor community.
