"Christy has been pivotal the entire year of 2023 with my recurring symptoms. She consistently replied to my patient portal messages, office visits, and even followed up after seeing I was at the MUSC ED on Thanksgiving day. She made my challenging year bearable."
Heroes come in various forms, and some wear scrubs. Congratulations to Christy Price, RN, for receiving the The DAISY Foundation Award at MUSC Health Kershaw Medical Center!

Caring for patients in resource-challenged environments can be very different from working in a Level 1 Trauma Center. Medical Director Thomas Barrows, MD, FACEP shares a story of how asking a patient one question - "anything else I can do to help you?" - changed everything for him.
The patient being discharged looked like he was wasting away. Years ago, he had ingested drain opener and now he was dependent on a feeding tube - but he had nowhere to go, no insurance, and didn't know where to get feeding tube supplies. "Just handing the guy a prescription wasn't really the solution," Dr. Barrows says, who was able to connect him to a large supply of Ensure, help him complete a Medicaid application, and connect him to a shelter and follow-up care.
This is just one example of why providers need to take a different approach to patient care on Indigenous lands. Slowing down, asking the right questions, and getting to know patients' backgrounds is so vital. Whole-person care can make all the difference for a patient whose presenting complaint may not tell the whole story.
"Being able to solve these problems goes beyond showing up to work, punching a clock and saying 'Next' to the next patient," says Dr. Barrows. "We have to do things differently."

Last month, VITAS Healthcare was invited back on Capitol Hill to offer our expertise and contextualize the recent study by NORC at the University of Chicago. Our Chief Medical Officer Dr. Joe Shega joined Dianne Munevar from NORC and Susan Lloyd of Delaware Hospice to brief Congress on the value of hospice in Medicare.
The NORC research highlighted that hospice saved the Medicare Trust Fund $3.5 billion in 2019. Furthermore, it showed that as patients stay on the benefit longer, the cost savings and quality improvements keep growing. For instance, patients who used the service for more than six months achieved an average savings of 11% across all categories of primary disease, from neurodegenerative (like dementia and Alzheimer’s) to chronic kidney/end-stage renal.
This research continues to underscore the need for a community-based palliative care benefit. If we’re truly delivering a full continuum of care, patients with serious illnesses need access to specialized services, like palliative care, while they’re still receiving curative treatment. Palliative care is proven to help improve outcomes, reduce hospitalizations, and lower overall cost of care.
Thank you to Dr. Shega and our industry partners for putting this critical research on policymakers’ radars and advocating for a community-based palliative care benefit.

Anecdotally, the greater the geographic distance from the client (the larger the behemoth that owns hundreds of hospice/palliative care residences across the country, the more reportable to stockholders), the less patient centric the business model is likely to be.
Residences that are regionally run with fewer layers of bureacracy between administrator, caregiver and client are more apt to beneficially reflect the culture of the communities in which they operate.
Maintaining that balance is an ongoing and achieveable goal, as Dr. Shega submits.

Hospice teams focus on making patients comfortable through their end-of-life period, rather than curative medical treatments. This increases the overall quality of life for both patients and families, while also reducing the burden of medical care. The Inter-Disciplinary Team provides emotional, psychological, physical, and spiritual support to ensure patients live a meaningful life until the end.
