On Monday, our CEO, Thierry Andretta, led a discussion on sustainable development at Shanghai Fashion Week's M Space forum. Invited by the Shanghai Fashion Week Committee, Andretta tackled 'Decoding the Sustainability Mindset of Mulberry and Chinese Consumers', moderated by @Dan Cui, former Editor-in-Chief of GQ Style China, and founder of sustainable fashion platform CanU. Andretta underscored our commitment to sustainability – ingrained in our DNA since day one – and emphasised our ethos of not passing on any extra costs to customers. He highlighted the importance of localised strategies in luxury brand development; China's progress in sustainability over the last five years; and the role of digitalisation in achieving industry sustainability, noting our proactive adoption of digital advancements. Addressing evolving consumer attitudes in China, Andretta noted a shift towards mindful consumption and a preference for quality, craft, and timeless luxury items. Stressing transparency, he emphasised the need to further share our sustainability progress with Chinese consumers, especially in light of their heightened interest amidst the climate crisis. Looking ahead, Andretta acknowledged the transformative potential of AI, which Mulberry aims to leverage to accelerate and enhance our sustainability efforts. #MulberryEngland

Breaking away from greenwashing and the need for legislation. This message was heard loud and clear during the evening with Singapore Fashion Council and The Matcha Initiative. I was privileged to present on sustainability communication and greenwashing at this interactive event. This gathering brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, sparking engaging discussions and invaluable insights from within the fashion industry. Here are just some of the reflections captured: 🛍️ The correlation between greenwashing and over-consumption: although there is limited research in this area, misleading green claims can drive consumers to over-consumption, perpetuating environmental and social harm. https://lnkd.in/gYWRS36H ⚖️ The urgent need for regulation: stringent policies around sustainability claims and legalized communication guidelines are needed to avoid the vague language, jargon and greenwashing shades we have become used to. In Asia, Singapore is a pioneer in this space: https://lnkd.in/gW2kYzEv 🔍 Ambiguity in key terms like sustainability: blurred and varied definitions underscore the importance of establishing clear standards. https://lnkd.in/gCi6VHbB 📢 Making sustainability communication more accessible: sustainability narratives must be more relatable and engaging for the general public instead of relying solely on dense reports. 🏷️ Guidelines for labelling in the fashion industry: this is needed due to its central role in consumer decision-making. And on a positive note… ♻️👚 Celebrating upcycling and sustainable practices: the discussions throughout the 3 breakout groups discussed inspiring efforts in upcycling, rescuing, sustainable clothing and many more. There is so much potential for positive change. These discussions are just the beginning. Sustainable fashion requires a collaborative effort and I’m excited to continue these conversations. 🌍🤝 Thank you to Singapore Fashion Council, my co-facilitator Sharon Lim and The Matcha Initiative for the opportunity to contribute. 🙏 #Sustainability #Greenwashing #FashionIndustry #SingaporeFashionCouncil #SustainableFashion
The Matcha Initiative kicked off 2024 with our first evening last Tuesday, on the topic of Sustainable Fashion. In collaboration with Singapore Fashion Council, we held “Fashion Sustainability in Singapore: Navigating Challenges/Building Bridges” at The Cocoon Space - a pleasant transition out of the holiday haze! Some key topics that were discussed include: 💡 Global trends in the industry 🔍 Singapore’s Fashion Ecosystem 🤔 Alternative Consumption Models ❌ Greenwashing 📜 Certification as tools to build trust As consumers demand and pressure for clear sustainable actions, and as transparent communication and trustworthy certification become stronger, we can see that new consumption modes are emerging and starting to shape our habits for the future. The clothes we wear tell a story, and it's time companies tell a story that respects our planet. Fashion isn’t a trend, it’s commitment. A huge thank you to the Singapore Fashion Council for making this evening possible, Ting-Ting Zhang 张婷婷, @Liwei Liu, Elicia C., Nicole van der Elst Desai , @Sharon Lim, our TMI Facilitators who shared their knowledge and experience and worked hard to prepare our workshops, Natalie Seisser, Savera Weerasinghe, Karin Aue, Ivona Balint-Kowalczyk, Holly Naylor, Zofia Chlapowski, as well as our speakers Raye Padit @Jeff Chen Our next event is Sustainability Strategy & Governance, a masterclass conducted by Keziah Quek, sign up here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gt6VP2h6 #Sustainability #SustainableFashion #SustainableSolutions #Fashion #SustainableEvent

With a population of 1.4 billion people, and this number growing, it's essential to understand the #sustainability trends in the #fashion industry in China. Chinese #luxury shoppers exhibit the following characteristics: 💠 They actively seek products that offer a sense of purpose and uniqueness 👗 They appreciate the need for longevity in fashion 🔄 They search for a true value (beyond price tag) Based on testimonials, when it comes to sustainable living, #Chinese consumers tend to be more practical than their Western counterparts. They focus more on products that improve their personal health rather than being overly concerned with environmental issues. While this is a significant first step towards more mindful #consumption, I believe there's a crucial need for a shift in thinking. We need to find ways to connect #global environmental challenges with people's #everyday choices. Can and should luxury brands play a more #influential role in educating and directing the attention of Chinese consumers towards #sustainability goals?! source: https://lnkd.in/ei2Eamzb

Global insights for local impact—this sentence has changed the way I see sustainable fashion. Let me break it down! Throughout my career, living and working across different continents—from Korea to Paris, and from Hong Kong to New Delhi and Germany—has shaped my perspective on the fashion industry for good. Each country taught me unique lessons about sustainability, culture, and business practices. In Korea, I was inspired by innovative fabric technologies. Working in Paris, I learned the importance of heritage and artisan craftsmanship. Hong Kong introduced me to the pace of fashion retail, while New Delhi exposed me to the complexities of textile waste. Germany, with its strong focus on sustainability & tech, showed me the importance of rigorous environmental standards. These diverse experiences have reinforced my belief that sustainability in fashion should be practical, accessible, and inclusive. It must address every end of the supply chain—from the sourcing of materials to the end consumer. 💡 We need solutions that are as diverse as the cultures that inspire them, ensuring that sustainability is not just a concept but a practical, universal reality. At WORLD COLLECTIVE , we are committed to bringing these global insights into practical applications, helping brands and suppliers connect more meaningfully and sustainably. Join us as we work towards a more inclusive and holistic approach to fashion that honors and incorporates the richness of diverse global perspectives by by leveraging innovation in our favor.

🌎 The Americas are home to a diverse fashion landscape, with the United States solidifying its position as the largest apparel market globally in 2022. Across North and South America, we are witnessing the emergence of policy initiatives, some of which are now gaining momentum and have the potential to influence the way fashion is produced, marketed, consumed, and disposed of. Keeping track of the developments across the Americas is a complex task, as it involves monitoring various states, provinces, and countries, each with its own legislative landscape, timelines, and levels of engagement. REAL TALK. Could the reason why the fashion industry is slow in making the necessary changes towards sustainability be because the people at the table are being too diplomatic? I’m asking for a friend. I say ‘too diplomatic’ because every room where change is being discussed should have diplomatic representation but needs radical voices as well. ‘Challenging the status’ quo I’ve come to accept as my MO, and the best part is I come with solutions that sustain, having real impact. Some say its my weakness but I embrace it as a strength. Over the last few weeks, I’ve read articles where Paul Dillinger of #LEVI and SEBASTIEN KOPP of #Veja challenge the industry’s unsustainable stance on growth, so I’m not alone in my thinking. I’ve also heard an industry leader say ‘if consumers demand sustainability but fund the growth of SHEIN why should the industry bother’. I say because it’s our responsibility. An industry that has led in creativity and innovation can surely lead changes that restore our planet, consumer experience that’s diverse and appreciate the cultures that sustain it. As a creative, I love the fashion industry but as a sustainability and circular economy expert, I demand change. 🙋🏾♀️ I am raising my hand as a radical voice for change and I welcome my invitation to the room. However, I will continue to build my table and all fellow radical voices for change towards a more sustainable fashion industry are welcome.

Happy Earth Day! 💚🌎💙 In an industry known for opulence and innovation, sustainability has become not just a trend, but a fundamental pillar guiding our practices. From ethically sourced materials to eco-conscious production processes, luxury brands are redefining what it means to be truly chic in a world that values both style and sustainability. However, sustainability isn't just about materials—it's about mindset. The fashion industry must be dedicated to reducing its carbon footprint at every stage, from design to delivery. There is much work to do, that's no secret, but I applaud the brands who have been trailblazers in this space and continue to set the standard for others to follow. #EarthDay #SustainableFashion #Sustainability
