Both are travel industry companies, but with best customers who behave very differently: Marriott: 👉 Global hotel chain 👉 Best customers are frequent business travelers 👉 Also targets large group bookings 👉 A top Marriott customer commonly spends several hundred nights a year in a hotel. ✅ 80/20 rule holds for Marriott where 20% of the customer base contributes 80% or more of the net margin annually. Expedia: 👉Frequent business travelers are not using Expedia. They already have a favorite hotel, a favorite airline, and some status in loyalty programs. 👉Expedia customers only travel once or twice a year 👉Not a lot of repeat business. ✅ For Expedia, it's more of a 60/80 rule. The repeat purchase frequency is so low, it completely changes the dynamic. In this Mucker Growth Series clip, Sally Duby with The Bridge Group discusses what sales hires to make and when. 👉 Whenever you hire an SDR or an AE, try to hire a minimum of two at the same time: 1️⃣ Training these roles is intensive, time-consuming, and likely done by the CEO/founder at this stage, so maximize the efficiency by training multiple hires. 2️⃣ Hiring at least two individuals gives you a baseline for understanding the quality of hiring (and if they are what you need at this point in time). If one is doing well and one is not, you can dive into what the person doing well is doing effectively and try to replicate that in training the other person. With only one hire, you don't have a comparison. 📈 When you start to hit $1M ARR run rate and have two or more AEs or SDRs, you're at the point of hiring a sales leader. Below that, you might consider a fractional CRO, but you should definitely hire the AEs or SDRs. Keep things high-level, convey potential, then move on. 👉 You want investors to ask "Where did you get those numbers? What assumptions did you make? Is there a model to back this up?" 🔬 You're looking for that questioning. You want to convert the investor into someone interested in learning more, someone curious enough to have a second meeting to dig deeper (a product demo, a market deep dive, or a financial model walkthrough). 🙌 Be prepared to do any of those so wherever the investor leans, you can say "I'd love to dig in on that, let's set up a time." This also positions your team as one that makes data-driven decisions.
