The “Investigating Animal Abuse for Law Enforcement” course at the ASPCA Employment Opportunities ASPCA provides law enforcement professionals with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively investigate cases of animal abuse and cruelty. Participants gain a comprehensive understanding of the legal framework surrounding animal cruelty laws and the specific protocols for investigating and prosecuting these cases. Throughout the course ASPCA, attendees learn about the signs and indicators of animal abuse, neglect, and cruelty. They gain insights into different types of abuse, such as physical abuse, neglect, and organized animal fighting. Participants also learn how to properly document evidence, including collecting photographs, videos, and forensic samples, to build a strong case against perpetrators. The course covers interviewing techniques for witnesses, victims, and suspects in animal abuse cases. Participants learn how to conduct thorough interviews, gather information, and assess credibility to ensure a comprehensive investigation. Additionally, the course addresses the collaboration between law enforcement agencies and animal welfare organizations. Participants learn about the roles and responsibilities of each entity in investigating animal abuse cases and how to effectively work together to ensure the welfare of animals and successful prosecution of offenders. Our colleagues at the Animal League Defense Fund created National Justice for Animals Week to raise public awareness around crimes committed against animals. Here are some actions you can take to raise awareness about animal cruelty: ✔️ Have a plan: identify which agencies in your community are responsible for responding to criminal animal cruelty. We recommend that you contact your local humane society or SPCA and speak to the Animal Cruelty Investigations department. If there is no local SPCA or humane society where you live, call the provincial SPCA, the local police or the RCMP to report the abuse. ✔️ Take action by signing petitions and sharing national and local animal issues with your close network. ✔️ Don’t just read the news—make it! Write a letter to the editor about an issue involving animals in your area. Please join us on September 25 at 3:00pm EDT for a webinar discussion with Mary Lou Randour, Ph.D and Dr. Lynn Addington about animal cruelty that occurs with intimate partner violence and family violence. A recent study offers new insights on “the link”, cases of animal cruelty that occur alongside intimate partner violence (IPV) and family violence (FV). This research relies on data from the FBI’s National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS) to explore characteristics of 278 animal cruelty incidents that occurred with IPV or FV in 2020. The NIBRS data collection gathers details about animal cruelty crimes as well as over 50 other offenses that are reported to law enforcement agencies across the United States. Previous research on the link between IPV and FV will be presented to provide a context for the current findings and to illustrate how these current findings support and expand that work. We also will explore the potential of this current research to inform the prosecution of these offenses. https://lnkd.in/gsAMdBd8

**Attention Animal Care and Control Professionals ** Animal abuse often occurs before or alongside the abuse of people, which is commonly known as the Violence Link. In a social system that is overtaxed and underfunded, animal welfare is marginalized or completely ignored, despite evidence that shows there is greater benefit in acting holistically, thereby providing better support for victims and survivors, and reducing the vulnerability of animals and people.
