MSC starts the process of disconnecting from 2M with it's 2nd stand alone service to serve the UK. Similar to their first stand alone East-West service, the Swan, which calls to Felixstowe as it's first POD in Europe, the new Britannia service will call to the UK first into Liverpool port. This will restrict the size of the vessels that can operate on the service but will hopefully divert some of the shipments that would traditionally run on the main southern port services and spread the volumes across more services. A couple of initial benefits/downsides jump out: - Firstly there is no SE Asia hub call on the import leg, therefore reducing the congestion risk but also reducing options from SE Asia outports unless MSC can utilise a feeder network into Vung Tau; The 3 main CBP of NGB/SHA/YTN are covered but no NCN coverage, again reducing the risk of delays with small port call counts and not having to transit up to NCN and back down the coast. Direct call to Liverpool cuts the transit once landed for Northern England cargo and also avoids potential congestion at the Southern ports or on the rail. From March 20, 2024, the coverage of our Mediterranean ports will change – a change designed to serve your northbound reefer markets and expand your opportunities. Here's what you need to know: - We'll be adding Vigo, ES (Termavi Terminal), as a first port of call in the Mediterranean to provide you with faster transit times to markets in northern Spain and Portugal. - Tangier, MA is now served exclusively by transshipment and is therefore not part of the new rotation. - We're adding a call at Salerno, IT to extend your cargo coverage from north to south in Italy. Baleària plans to open a new ferry route between San Pedro de Macorís (Dominican Republic) and Mayagüez (Puerto Rico) after summer 2024.   The shipping company plans to provide a daily ferry service over the 133 miles between the two ports. It also plans to build a terminal in the port of San Pedro de Macorís and adapt the one in Mayagüez.   The company will make this 7-hour crossing with an eco-efficient ship that could become the first LNG-powered ferry in the Caribbean.   The customer service and the quality of onboard services will be a priority, and the daily connections will enhance ro-ro cargo transport to guarantee express deliveries in less than 24 hours, where reliability and punctuality stand as the main competitive advantages.   The digitalization of services and AI will contribute to achieving the maximum excellence in transport services.   In addition, Baleària plans to invest 100 million dollars in the launch of this new maritime line, including the construction of more than 100,000m2 port facilities. In the port of San Pedro de Macorís, in the Dominican Republic, a multifunctional passenger terminal will be built, and in the port of Mayagüez, in Puerto Rico, it is planned to adapt existing facilities. Both facilities will have a gangway and a finger as well as a ramp to enhance the loading and unloading of vehicles.   Baleària has been operating in the Caribbean since 2011, where it currently connects Fort Lauderdale with the Bahamian islands of Grand Bahama and Bimini.   This new service will be Baleària's third route in the Caribbean and its sixth internationally. #ferry #carribean
