Crypto hacks increase in 2024, but smart contracts are not only to blame. Private key compromises and hot wallet attacks account for 78% of stolen funds last year. As crypto valuations increase, we will see an increase in the complexity of hack attacks. I wonder whether that was due to a price drop or just security and blockchain analytics becoming more proactive. Our mission has always been to help keep cryptocurrency safe and education is a critical pillar for this - great to see the work Rohit Gupta, Natalia Łątka, Ian Lee, CBC and Guru Prasant Rajam Ravi have put in having an impact. In today's world, a basic understanding of mixers, AML/CFT, and cryptocurrency investigations is required for every executive that deals with cryptocurrency. Quite topical that this week as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), U.S. Department of Justice, IRS Criminal Investigation, and Europol announced that the co-founders of Samourai mixer, Keonne Rodriguez and William Hill, were arrested and charged for operating Samourai wallet. Prosecutors alleged that Samourai helped execute more than $2 billion in unlawful transactions and helped launder more than $100 million of illicit funds from dark web markets. In this next phase of cryptocurrency growth, every operator must be armed with knowledge to keep criminals out of their platform and investigators should be given resources to stop the growth of criminal activity.
