What a great opportunity to learn more about incorporating actions of reconciliation into your work in the lead up to #NDTR - thank you RJC Engineers for offering this valuable webinar to the public. We look forward to attending! #indigenouspeoples #webinar #truthandreconciliation
In recognition of the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation (NDTR), RJC will host the third installment of the Building a Foundation for Reconciliation webinar series. With the symbolism of braided sweetgrass, the theme of this session is Braiding: Relationships, Community and Trust. This foundational session will help architecture, engineering, construction, other industry professionals and stakeholders gain a deeper understanding of how to braid meaningful actions of reconciliation into their projects, and how they can be better allies to support the self-determination of Indigenous Nations. This webinar is presented in partnership with the IISAAK OLAM Foundation and the Canadian Mountain Network. Everyone is welcome to attend. MD @ Terra Measurement | Geospatial Surveying, 3D Visualization, Structural Monitoring, Sustainable care for Heritage
This is a great short read by our friend and SPAB scholar, Lewis Hobbs. We are regularly discussing #Thatching in our SPAB Technical and Research Committee meetings. These discussions brought focus to me on just how fragile the ongoing legacy of traditional crafts can be. It is not just the training and 'generational hand over' of these skills that is the challenge. It is a complex mix of economics, sustainability, materials, bureaucracy, and worst of all, ambivalence. With thatching in particular, there are theorietocally no practical barriers to achieving the growing and production of the sustainable supplies. Land could be attributed to reeds sustainably, long straw varieties could possibly be incorporated as part of wheat harvesting, and there is plenty of scope for managed coppicing of hazel for spurs. The real problems lie with misconceptions and economics. Installed and managed well, a thatched roof offers the ultimate sustainability, durability, and very good thermal properties (cool in the summer, warm in the winter). With reasonable costs for UK produced supplies and maintenance (not cheap, but sustainable), there would be jobs produced and a natural succession of this traditional craft. Many people are trying very hard to achieve this goal, but help is required and barriers and misconceptions need to be broken down. Have a read and contact The SPAB if you think you could help with financial or other support. Sally Stradling Joe Orsi Historic England English Heritage
"What was once seen as progress has had a lasting impact on land management that will take time to reverse." Lewis Hobbs, Architectural Assistant and 2023 SPAB Scholar, explores how a changing world has altered thatching in the UK — and what can be done to secure the future of this traditional craft. https://bit.ly/3PGXBdS
