Is reducing plastic packaging a good thing ? Amazon have reduced their plastic packaging by 95% with the aim of removing it entirely by the end of the year. Obviously plastic waste is bad for the environment, but it can be recycled if its disposed of properly. I feel like we've forgotten about the impact that increased paper usage is having on wildlife when rainforests are being taken down. It seems like a lose-lose situation! I believe a company as large as Amazon should focus on creating better biodegradable packaging materials, or invest in infrastructure to ensure more of their waste materials are being recycled. Amazon is contributing big-time to a greener future! Let's discuss how they've led the charge in sustainable packaging so far: 🌍 Since 2015, they've cut per-shipment packaging weight by 41%—that's over 2 million tons of packaging saved, equivalent to 173 Seattle Space Needles! 🔄 In 2022 alone, they reduced single-use plastic delivery packaging by 11.6% globally and shipped 11% of orders without additional packaging. ♻️ In Europe and India, they've swapped single-use plastics for 100% recyclable paper and cardboard. And, to achieve these milestones, they have incorporated these practices: -Minimising excess packaging -Expanding the use of paper packaging -Optimising packaging sizes As a manufacturer of sustainable packaging solutions, KIG Kraft Tech Containers Pvt Ltd core values align with Amazon's approach to building a sustainable environment. 🌍📦 **Creating a Circular Economy: How Amazon Can Innovate Sustainability** Amazon's transition to paper void fill is a great step toward sustainability. But why stop there? Imagine if Amazon created its own recycling ecosystem, picking up used boxes and paper during deliveries. This closed-loop system would not only benefit the environment but also offer significant cost savings. Here's how it could work: 1. **Pick-Up During Delivery**: When delivering a package, drivers collect any used Amazon boxes and paper void fill from customers. 2. **Centralized Recycling Hubs**: These materials are taken to regional recycling hubs where they are processed and turned back into usable packaging. 3. **Reuse and Reduce**: Recycled materials are sent back to Amazon’s packaging centers, reducing the need for new raw materials. **Potential Savings:** - **Reduced Raw Material Costs**: By recycling, Amazon can cut down on the expense of purchasing new packaging materials. - **Lower Disposal Costs**: Collecting and recycling in-house reduces waste disposal fees. - **Enhanced Brand Loyalty**: Customers appreciate eco-friendly practices, potentially increasing sales and customer retention. **Estimated Savings:** Assuming Amazon processes 2 billion packages annually and spends around $1 per package on new packaging materials, even a 20% reduction in new material use through recycling could save around $400 million per year. This initiative could set a new standard in e-commerce, showcasing Amazon’s commitment to sustainability while driving substantial cost savings. Let's make the future greener, one package at a time! #Sustainability #Manufacturing #Packaging

🌍 Amazon has taken a monumental step towards sustainability by replacing 95% of plastic air pillows in North America with recyclable paper fillers. ♻️ 📦 This shift is part of Amazon’s broader initiative to fully eliminate plastic air pillows by the end of the year, potentially avoiding nearly 15 billion annually. 📉 This initiative marks Amazon's largest packaging reduction effort in North America. For this year’s #PrimeDay, almost all deliveries will be free of plastic air pillows, making recycling easier for customers. 🌱 🏢 This transition began with Amazon’s first U.S. automated fulfilment centre in Ohio, where plastic air pillows were replaced with paper filler. The successful pilot quickly led to implementation across hundreds of fulfilment centres, involving thousands of employees in new system training. 📦👷 💡 Amazon's investment in reducing packaging waste includes programs like the Ships in Product Packaging program, ensuring items can be shipped safely in their original packaging and eliminating the need for additional packaging. In 2022, 11% of all Amazon packages globally shipped without added delivery packaging. 📦🌍 🤖 Additionally, Amazon is innovating new materials and recycling solutions. Collaborating with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Glacier, a San Francisco-based AI and robotics company, Amazon is developing AI-powered robots to automate recycling sorting and collect real-time data on recycling streams. ♻️📊 …… Enjoyed this post? Amazon is making strides in sustainable packaging! The company states that 95% of plastic air pillows in its North American delivery packaging have already been replaced with paper filler, with a full phase-out expected by the end of the year. This move aligns with Amazon’s commitment to prioritize: - The importance of separate collection in the paper recycling stream - A separate collection which improves recyclability These efforts are set to eliminate nearly 15 billion plastic air pillows annually, contributing to Amazon’s broader goal of removing plastic delivery packaging from its North American fulfillment centers. Similar plans are also underway in Europe to reduce air pillow usage, reflecting a global commitment to sustainability. Props to Amazon for creating its first PLASTIC-FREE fulfillment center in Ohio! 🎉 Amazon rebuilt its existing equipment to work with paper filler instead of plastic air pillows, without compromising on weight, durability, and package size. This is a huge first step in the right direction of eliminating single-use packaging plastics in the U.S. Matt Littlejohn, senior vice president of Oceana, criticized Amazon for its "multi-year" timeline. "Unfortunately, Amazon, in this announcement, did not make a clear, quantifiable, and time-bound commitment, so it is unclear when, where, and how much real plastic reduction there will be." While I'm not usually an Amazon-defender, I back their decision not to announce an exact timeline at this point. They've just implemented the plastic-free operations and need time to test it and work out the kinks. Plus, announcing an exact timeline for when the process would be rolled out across the U.S. would do the company no good, and simply create a deadline for them to fail at hitting in the future. Organizations like Oceana would cling to that deadline, ready to blast Amazon for not hitting it (and subsequently ignoring the impressive progress of getting halfway there). I'm an advocate of pressuring large corporations to transition to more sustainable and environmentally friendly operations, and offer transparency about how they're getting there. However, I also think that we can't ALWAYS be critical. We have to applaud milestones along the way. Bringing attention to positive milestones encourages other companies to take similar action. Whereas harboring on what's still left to do has the opposite effect. It can make other companies think, "Well if they're not doing it yet, why should we?" There's a happy medium between celebrating the milestones and getting back to work -- but this announcement deserves a solid moment of recognition in my opinion.

📣 Did you know all of Amazon’s delivery packaging in the UK and across Europe is now fully recyclable? This includes all items sold by Amazon, and independent small business sellers who use our fulfilment network. In the past year, we’ve grown the number of products shipped without any additional Amazon packaging by more than 50%. In total, it means that we’ve avoided using 1bn+ single-use plastic delivery bags from our distribution networks since 2019! This is just one part of our long-term effort to be a leader in sustainability. https://lnkd.in/emYGC9sR #Amazon #Sustainability #Recycling

Amazon has recently announced that they have achieved 100% recyclable packaging in their European delivery operations. Good to see progress on this important initiative to reduce single use plastics. But also makes me wonder if this was possible due to the various regulations coming out of EU (the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation in this case) forcing companies like Amazon to prioritize this topic. I know in various posts and news articles the EU is sometimes portrayed as an entity trying to slow down innovation through its aggressive regulatory posture. But don't regulations also have a role in encouraging business growth. Surely new businesses will be built (and jobs created) as new types of packaging materials need to be created to satisfy needs from companies like Amazon. Thoughts? #sustainablepackaging #circulareconomy #lowcarboneconomy https://lnkd.in/d2MUxfH8
