This is attributed to Twain and others. I picked it up when I decided, on a whim, to tackle a duathlon with no experience and only 2 weeks of training. We are often capable of more than we realize. If we tell ourselves we can’t make it, we need to slow down, or it’s not worth the risk, then we won’t succeed. Yet if we tell ourselves we can kick ass, even if we fall short, it’s still more than we could have done otherwise. For me, perceived limitations don’t matter. 𝗪𝗵𝗼'𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸? 𝗪𝗵𝗼'𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂?  Every Weekend I go for a 6 mile run. Most walkers and cyclists ignore me. Even though I always say good morning. Except one cyclist. When I see him on a Sunday. He always encourages me. "Well done fella" "Doing a great job" "Keep going nearly done". One day we had a chat, with a lot in common, • grew up in the same notorious estate as me. • He ran in the first Great South Run like me. • He's 20 years older than me. He cycles every Sunday to keep fit and get out. I still see him most Sunday's. It's really nice just to have someone there - Quietly supporting you. I guess that's what I do with my coaching clients. There to listen and support and gently challenge. Helping people to explore and realise. Asking questions that reflect. Providing practical support. When useful. Drawing from my leadership experience. In many sectors and industries. Who's got your back? You don't have to do it on your own. I often use the analagy of running a marathon when describing business transformation. First, because as a "marathoner" myself I appreciate the preperation that goes into running 26.2 miles as well as the impact it has on you physically and mentally (just as a business transformation does). Second, because just as in running a marathon (atleast for most of us) it isn't about "winning" or "losing", unless you are one of those amazing elite athletes vying for a marathon win, but rather getting better! 💪 Business transformation takes time, planning, and a lot of work. It also takes a total team effort. When you see those elite marathoners running faster than most of us could ever imagine for 26.2 miles, keep in mind that they have a team of people working with them. They have nutritionists, running coaches and some even have sports psychologists working with them in preperation for every race. 👊 When planning for your next transformation, remember that it's like running a marathon! #leadership #lean #businesstransformation #continuousimprovement #achangeinlatitudeconsulting

What can volleyball teach us about success? My daughter's volleyball team showed me something important this weekend. They won their tournament while having a blast, mistakes and all.  The other team – technically better players – lost. Why? Their attitudes made the difference. My daughter's team bounced back from errors with laughter and cheers. The other team fixated on mistakes, blame crept in, and joy disappeared. Attitude shapes your reality and this applies to more than just sports. Years ago, I taught workshops on the power of mindset in negotiations. Your attitude – how you think and feel –  impacts how you perceive everything and ultimately, your results. Focus on what makes a winning team Like my daughter's team, set clear goals that support your bigger objective. Focus on working well together, not just the scoreboard. When mistakes happen (and they will), move on quickly. Don't fixate on what went wrong – focus on how to improve as a team.
