As I celebrate my two-year milestone as a Media Relations Manager, I've come to appreciate the paramount importance of transparency and trust in our interactions with the media. These values have remained consistent, even as the media landscape undergoes significant changes due to declining resources. Understanding our audience, being crisis-ready, and respecting off-the-record conversations continue to guide me in building enduring relationships with journalists. In this ever-evolving environment, characterized by reduced resources, adaptability to new technologies and a deep understanding of the news cycle have become crucial. It's been a rewarding journey navigating these changes, and I remain committed to fostering positive media connections despite the evolving challenges.

That first job is so important.
“The most important thing in media is that first job. At WOUB Public Media, you got to spend all that time at the station in front of a live mic on radio and in front of a live camera on TV," said Bob Mihalic. "You end up so far ahead of everybody else and are able to get a great first job. The first job sets up everything in your career and working at WOUB gave me the ability to get that first job. WOUB was everything.” #WOUBProud Ohio University Scripps College of Communication

It's always a pleasure to chat about comms and comedy with Krystine Nation and seamus boyer! I stupidly didn't take a photo, so pinching Krystine's for my own post 😅 I love that in the past year especially, more and more are my two passions are fusing together, and I can speak about both at conferences like this. Using comedy in you comms, not just in social media, can be incredibly valuable and effective. Getting it right can be hard, but that's where having creatives in your teams is so important. But the one thing that you need to make it work is AWARENESS. Awareness of self (your organisation, your brand, how it's received by your customers, what are the common/stereotypical tropes). Awareness of your audience (who are they, what are they passionate about, what do they like, what don't they like, why do they feel the way they do about your business). Get that down, and the rest comes much, much easier 😎 Thank you to Tina Luke for inviting me to take part!
I've had so many firsts since beginning my journey at Horowhenua District Council, but today was by far the furtherest I've been out of my comfort zone. I can stand on stage in front of hundreds of people and perform comedy without even a pinch of fear, but for some reason discussing my profession in front of my peers scares the pants off me. Today I got to be a Virtual guest speaker for the 2nd Annual Public Sector Comms Week Conference in Canberra along side my good friends Ben Caldwell and seamus boyer. We spoke about inserting humor in Government comms and why humanising our businesses is so important. There is a real difference between talking at people and talking with people and it was an absolute honor to share our thoughts on this communication style. What an experience, I'm not sure anything I said made sense but that doesn't matter because I am just buzzing at having been handed this opportunity. Thank you Tina Luke for having me!

My Mass Comms 101 professor (Yvette Arts 🫶) described PR professionals as connectors; as people who kept bridges in one pocket and chasms in other. Their practice within the communications realm was, naturally, pairing the right chasm to the right bridge. This snapshot captured just that: connecting Houston filmmakers to Houston marketers to Houston career resources. Not to get too sentimental, but lives were changed on this project as we all had an opportunity to find the right bridge-to-chasm fit. As you go into December, the most ridiculous and hectic month for Corporate America, keep this in mind: often times the best thing you can do for someone is make a connection. It takes nothing from you— a text message, an intro email, an exchange of ideas on the back of a napkin— but it has the power to change someone else’s life.
