While attending the Self-Service Innovation Summit several years ago, my eyes were opened to the opportunities of intelligent parking experiences and parking management. Image left represents the traditional parking experience where vehicles are identified by printed tickets. This is a high-touch user experience. It provides minimized operational control or insight. Technology is revolutionizing the driver and parking experience. Connected hardware and sensors are enabling advance vehicle management and the development of smart city infrastructure. City planners, real estate developers and parking garage operators are flocking to see the latest digital API-enabled parking equipment. Image right shows an innovative parking experience made possible with Vend Park. First-time visitors drive up to the kiosk, enter their phone number and add payment information. Returning visitors experience a fully-automated, drive-in and drive-out experience powered by automatic vehicle recognition. Operators remotely manage key operational functions from the cloud. They can also integrate into tenant experience and parking aggregator systems, while intelligently communicating with drivers based on parking inventory. The parking industry is driving more than driver experience and smart city infrastructure. It contributes to the overall economy more than you might imagine: In July of 2020 (Pre-COVID-19), Ernst & Young and the National Parking Association, released an Economic Impact Study which revealed that the parking industry represented 1% of GDP in the United States. The $131 billion industry employed 581,000 workers. (https://lnkd.in/gbBhQ_Wd) More recent reports from these organizations point to signs of continued industry rebound with a 93% recovery in parking revenue nationally. Events and airport parking have seen the fastest recovery, with municipal and commercial parking close behind.  (https://lnkd.in/gJ6gZmzT). In 2023, parking operators projected up to 15% growth, with the highest market gain in Atlanta, Miami, and New York City. Airport and events parking continue to generate the fastest revenue growth, exceeding pre-pandemic levels in 2022. My prediction for the industry: Advancements in sensor tech, connected kiosks, secure data integration and secure cloud-based parking management will empower more seamless parking experiences, increased revenue opportunities for parking operators and make room for intelligent parking management in smart cities across the nation.
