If you want to learn a little about the REALITY of advanced recycling and waste plastics, this is well worth a listen. The media soundbytes on our energy reality, and the energy transition path are typically woefully lacking in depth of insight or accurate perspective. Hear from two true industry experts who joined me for this roundtable.
Chemex Global CEO Doran Oancia recently led a dynamic discussion as the moderator for Houston Business Journal’s Table of Experts. This discussion featured insights from Matt Rodgers, CCO of Chemex Global, The Shaw Group, and Jeffrey McMahon, Managing Director for Freepoint Eco-Systems. Last spring, Chemex was awarded the contract to engineer, procure, fabricate, and construct Freepoint’s 240 MTPD advanced recycling facility in Ohio. The panel topics surrounded the energy transition, with a focus on waste plastic and plastic recycling. Unlocking the Future of Plastic Recycling: The Power of Combined Approaches In Europe, the quest for higher plastic recycling rates faces significant challenges. A recent study, highlighted by Sustainable Plastics, offers a beacon of hope, revealing that a combination of chemical and mechanical recycling can drastically improve these rates. This groundbreaking research suggests that by 2030, we could achieve an 80% recycling rate, with chemical recycling contributing up to 34% to this goal. This is not just a step forward; it's a leap towards a more sustainable future. At Enval Limited, we resonate with this vision. Our cutting-edge technologies in chemical recycling, along with our verification platform, are designed to complement each other, maximizing the circularity potential of plastics and ensuring transparency in the end-to-end supply chain. We believe in the power of collaboration and innovation to reach these ambitious goals. Together, we can rewrite the narrative of plastic recycling, turning today's challenges into tomorrow's achievements. Discover more about this study here. https://buff.ly/40KjaxX

Infinity Recycling BV, a Netherlands-based growth capital firm investing in advanced plastics recycling technologies, has secured €105.3 million in committed capital after closing the Circular Plastics Fund I. Infinity Recycling welcomed backing from its new investors, including the European Investment Fund (EIF) and GC Ventures (CVC of PTTGC), which the company said ‘underscores the strong market confidence’ in its vision and growth prospects. “We are pleased to have such well-regarded investors in the Circular Plastics Fund and are thankful for the support from new limited partners such as EIF and GC Ventures, who have recognised Infinity Recycling’s differentiated investment focus,” said Jan-Willem Muller, Managing Partner at Infinity Recycling. Circular Plastics Fund I has initial target size of €150 million. Circular Plastics Fund I aims to make investments that expedite the transition to a circular economy of plastics by scaling up high-potential advanced recycling technology companies that transform plastic waste streams into primary commodities used to produce new plastics. “The proportion of plastic packaging that is recycled is still far too low,” commented EIF Chief Executive Marjut Falkstedt. “Our climate change and environmental sustainability challenge is a combination of many different issues, and the excessive use of plastics is a major factor. “A lot can be achieved by changing our habits, but innovation is key to finding new ways of dealing with structural plastic use and making sure we use every piece of plastic as many times as possible. With the support of the InvestEU programme, we are very happy to be supporting this kind of innovation.” “Sustainability is key to our business operations and our commitments,” noted Kamel RAMDANI, Senior Vice President of PTTGC and MD of GC Ventures. “Applying the circular economy principle to closed-loop plastic waste management, recycling, and upcycling is mandatory. This includes developing new solutions through innovation and their market impact to better meet people’s needs.” Circular Plastics Fund I was launched in February 2022 and is expected to reach a final close in Q4 2023. #cleanenergy

Congratulations to PreOne Australia and Recycling Plastics Australia on their partnership to establish a $40 million advanced mechanical recycling plant for soft plastics with the assistance of a $20 million Recycling Modernisation Fund grant from the Australian Government. The project will create some much needed on-shore reprocessing capacity to address the 573,239 tonnes of soft plastic packaging that is being placed on market and made from 98% virgin material *. The plant should be capable of processing 14,000 tonnes of soft plastics each year, a welcome addition for Australia’s advancement towards a circular economy for soft plastics. Importantly, it will process some of the most difficult to recycle materials like shopping bags, chip packets, and food wrappers. 70% of all soft plastic packaging is used in the business-to-consumer space*. The APCO team is excited to welcome this new development into the soft-plastic recycling space, coming online in the next 12 months and creating 45 jobs in South Australia. Lee Ellen Drechsler, David Parrillo, Rui Vogt Alves da Cruz, Thank you for joining forces between P&G and Dow R&D to give a helping hand to Mother Earth removing the burden of plastic waste from her back. This marks several steps beyond AI. While AI is rapidly entering the field of R&D it can still only access information that has been published. AI cannot (yet) access what is in the heads of scientists in the form of “tacit knowledge” and even less so cross-fertilize this tacit knowledge for transformation into innovation. By bringing R&D forces together to co-create breakthroughs that protect our Planet, Dow and Procter & Gamble leave "The winner takes it all" paradigm behind and play a new song called "The winners make it all." Happy Easter Holidays! https://lnkd.in/d267MSiE
Some big news to share today! We have announced a new joint development agreement between Dow and Procter & Gamble, two companies that are committed to reaching ambitious sustainability goals through innovation and research. Our joint development program will use dissolution technology to increase recyclability of a large range of common household plastic materials, primarily those that are challenging to recycle such as rigids, flexibles and multi-layer packaging. The partnership between Dow and Procter & Gamble will help transform plastic waste into circular solutions that customers demand today! Well done to ANZPAC Members Amcor and Mondelēz International who have partnered with Licella to construct one of Australia's first advanced recycling facilities. Amcor and Mondelez will invest in Licella’s innovative Catalytic Hydrothermal Reactor (Cat-HTR™) technology. This innovative technology enables plastic to be recycled back into crude oil substitute at its end-of-life, producing new food-grade plastic packaging. ANZPAC applauds this key milestone in the development of a circular economy for plastic in Australia. This commitment demonstrates to the nation not only what can be achieved through collaboration, but that there is a clear roadmap to the recovery of soft plastics recycling in Australia.
