As today is Women's Equality Day let us reflect upon and honor those pioneers who fought for women's rights. And let us not forget that while progress has been made since women won the right to vote 103 years ago, there is still much ground to be won for women's equality. One example of this inequality that struck me recently in this article is how few women are leading retail companies. Out of the 86 retail companies in the Fortune 1000 only 13 have a woman as CEO. That in itself is egregious, but to add insult to injury 72% of retail workers on the front lines - cashiers - are women. This is not equality; far from it. Despite the racial and gender barriers she faced, Caroline R. Jones transformed the #advertising industry by defying norms, championing diversity, and elevating storytelling in advertising. You may not have heard her name, but you most certainly know the famous ads she touched - from Kentucky Fried Chicken and Campbell Soup to Toys "R" Us and Anheuser-Busch. Even today in advertising, women represent just 35.3% of creative directors and only 1% of agency owners. We have work to do.
