There is an art and science to maintaining independence as we age. This is demonstrated across studies from the Yale School of Medicine, but also through the lifestyle Moorings Park Communities has curated for residents. Check out our latest blog for insights on what Yale researchers, doctors, and scientists are discovering about the way we age and how Moorings Park Communities is implementing these methods across each of our Naples-based communities: https://hubs.la/Q02FKdjh0 #Yale #YaleResearch #YaleStudy #YaleMedicine #MooringsPark #MooringsParkCommunities #LuxurySeniorLiving #Naples #NaplesFL #SeniorLiving #NaplesSeniorLiving #NaplesRetirement #SWFLRetirement #SWFLRetirementCommunity #FloridaRetirement #CCRC #FloridaRetirementCommunity #FloridaSeniorLiving #FloridaCCRC #LifePlanCommunity

This week marks the open access publication of our study on older adult movement speeds within Long Term Care Facilities. Led by Bronwyn Forrest and the team at University of Waterloo, our paper “Older Adult Stair and Walking Speeds from Controlled Trials as Inputs into Simulations of Retirement Home Evacuation” has been published in Collective Dynamics : https://lnkd.in/ehT_Bixr. As part of the study I completed the Pathfinder retirement home simulations (day and night scenarios with residents, visitors and staff as modelled occupants) which showed differences in predicted time to egress when inputs from this study are used relative to model defaults, demonstrating that ensuring model input parameters accurately represent segments of the older adult population is critical in rendering more realistic predicted egress outcomes.

Boston College, my alma mater, announced that it is joining with other Massachusetts-based civil society institutions of higher education on a new program of Dialogue & Action for upgrading civil discourse. Their focus is on politics. But we need to expand the scope of Civil Discourse in the 21st Century, to include holding Pensions & Endowments accountable for prudence and loyalty in their deployment of the fiduciary money society entrusts to the plenary powers of discretionary authority to shape the right enterprise for shaping the right technologies for shaping the right choices for shaping the right economy for keeping a good society ongoing into a dignified future. For retirees, directly. For all of society, consequently. One way to do this is through programs of Citizens Juries sitting in Advisory Trials of Fiduciary Prudence and Loyalty. One way to organize these Citizens Juries could be in conjunction with universities.

This is an important public service announcement to all former collegiate athletes. Last year, the DKR Fund provided a $500,000 grant and multi-year commitment to launch UT Southwestern Peter O'Donnell Jr. Brain Institute's College Level Aging Athlete Study (CLEAATS). This landmark study is designed to advance medical science's understanding of how participation in collegiate sports and resulting sports-related concussions may impact brain wellness in later life. The study is seeking to recruit 500 individuals — 250 men and 250 women — over age 50 who played an NCAA or NAIA sport for at least one season in college to participate in the study. In the 1960s, the head was a battering ram, and a hit that made an athlete wobbly was euphemistically called '"getting your bell rung." We know better now, and research from this study will tell us more. At 74 years of age and a former collegiate student-athlete with some cognitive decline, my participation in the study will play a small part in helping answer some of the questions asked by CLEAATS. If you qualify for the study, click the link below to learn more about CLEAATS. If you don't qualify, please forward this to your friends who played college sports. https://lnkd.in/gk7dwXEK

I got this quote from a teacher just outside of the Houston, Texas area who contributed her own knowledge and expertise to the #TeachersServeToo book project. We did countless interviews with superintendents, admin leaders, and industry experts...but this quote was one that still haunts me. This experience pains my heart and highlights a stark reality: The system fails to care for those who have devoted their lives to service. Educators, who spend decades nurturing and shaping future generations, deserve better support and care in their retirement years. The fact that so many former educators return to the classroom or have to take on additional work in their retirement years not out of passion but necessity, speaks volumes about the gaps in our support systems. It’s the story of countless educators who face similar struggles. As a society, we must advocate for better healthcare and retirement benefits for our teachers. They deserve to retire with dignity, without the fear of medical bills or the inflated cost of living driving them back into the workforce. Let’s honor their service by building a system that truly cares. #TeachersServeToo #SupportOurTeachers #EducatorsDeserveBetter #RetirementWithDignity
