It is about time… …we recognize 🐋 the enormous importance of oceans for life on Earth; 🧪 the devasting impact current production processes have on ocean life; ⏱️ how close marine ecosystems are to irriversible collapse; 🌊 and that we can change our mindsets, our practices, our business models but we cannot revive a dead ocean.

🌱 A future where nature and society are thriving together, with biodiversity at the heart of our decisions shaping and governing society. 🌱 How do we get there? Twice this year alone. And I still don’t think I fully grasped all the layers of this chef d’oeuvre. The book addresses timely issues such as climate change, making it highly relevant for all of us, today. Ghosh mastered the art of adopting a holistic analysis all while narrating in an engaging way. The reader travels through a comprehensive analysis that ties together history, politics and the environment, offering a deep understanding of the systemic roots of current global crises. Delving into the history of the spice trade, particularly nutmeg, he compellingly illustrates how colonial powers exploited natural resources and indigenous populations. By highlighting indigenous perspectives, Ghosh appears to be a vivid advocate for a more inclusive and equitable approach to solving global problems. He emphasises that the same mechanisms of exploitation and extraction used during colonial times continue today in the form of global capitalism. A system that prioritises profit over ecological and human well-being, leading to widespread environmental destruction and interconnectedness of various global crises. Only by a thorough understanding of these connections, the root causes of our planet’s distress can be addressed.
