Kristopher had a goal. He wanted to officiate sporting events, but the registration fee, training fee and cost of shoes and uniform were more than he could afford. When a friend sent Kristopher a uniform and shoes to help him get started, Kristopher was inspired to create a nonprofit to help others in the same way. Today, Save Our Sports mentors, supports and empowers aspiring sports officials with a wide range of life-changing resources. This year, the percent of women leading Fortune 500 companies finally hit double digits. Now at over 10%, this is significant growth from when I first came across this stat in 2016 when it was only 4%. However, there is still much work to do. With women making up 48% of the workforce, there is still a very significant gap to fill when it comes to representation for women in the workforce. This Giving Tuesday (November 28), you can help close that gap by joining me in supporting Madam President Camp, a unique summer camp experience to help girls ages 11-13 find their true awesomeness. These camps build confidence, instill leadership principles and help these young campers finder their voice. It truly makes a difference in the life of a Kansas City girls!   Girls begin camp gaining a clear understanding of leadership and civic engagement to outline their civic goals and align themselves with areas of activism relevant in their community. They practice how to communicate those goals and topics and lastly, through self-discovery, create a path to their own personal action.    Campers have used their experiences to run for student council, start a cupcake business and even create a public awareness campaign for cleaner rivers.   Campers tell us this experience builds confidence. “If you want to put yourself out there, you can do anything,” says one enthusiastic camper. Another camper used her experience to run (and win) a position with her student council. ATTENTION – YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY TRUST NEEDS YOU! Last night I was privileged to attend the launch of the 2022-2023 Aberdeen FC Community Trust Community Trust (AFCCT) Impact Report. Whilst it was great to see all of the AFCCT family again (some of whom I’ve not seen in a wee while) and meet & hear from the likes of Alan Burrows, Johny Hayes, Angus MacDonald, Carrie Doig, et al…some of that was really just a bonus. It was truly humbling to hear about some of the great initiatives that AFCCT & it’s partners are involved in. The stats speak for themselves (especially David Ironside’s!) but that’s really just a wee part of the story. These things can’t (& don’t!) happen without continued funding and the efforts of all those involved, from the local councils, corporate sponsors, partner organisations, event attendees, small contributors (e.g to the can collections etc), staff & of course volunteers! It was great to see so many organisations represented there, including North East Scotland College Stork, a Fluor company Hall Morrice LLP etc …the list is truly massive but it could be even bigger. I’m proud to do my bit, albeit it’s currently a fairly small bit ( indeed, probably even smaller than Johny’s ;-) ). Could you or your organisation maybe help to support AFCCT to continue to run & expand their fantastic programmes? I’ve mentored a few founders recently to “play the game.” It’s folks who are similarly mission driven, have early traction in the health/caregiving space, and are getting ready to fundraise. My candid advice can be kind of shocking I’ve noticed. But here’s the thing: I think there’s something in hearing “play the game” that sounds like cheating. It’s not. That’s totally different and I’d never condone that at all. Consider college applications. Students who can access college consultants recognize there is a way to strengthen their candidacy. They are not saying they’d cheat to get there. They’re saying they want help navigating a system that they recognize is opaque. Do we all wish it were more equitable? That the systems were more meritocratic and transparent? ABSOLUTELY. But let me tell you…when I speak to founders who have raised successfully they say they learned the right positioning, process, strategy, and stakeholders. It’s like running a play in basketball. It’s getting a view of the court, knowing who in your team should cut in or screen, and how to overcome any blocks between you and the basket. The difference would be stepping on the court and throwing the ball up with nothing but a prayer. —— (Separately, last call for tomorrow’s fundraising workshop - link in bio above. Should be fun!)
