The standard length of a golf course is 18 holes, but the reason why is not entirely clear. According to Golf Digest, the first golf course, St. Andrews, had 18 holes, but it wasn’t always that way. In fact, the number of holes varied among courses in the early days of golf. The website Scottish Golf History states that St. Andrews originally had 22 holes, but in 1764, four short holes were combined into two (played in two directions), reducing the number of holes to 18. Other courses followed suit and eventually adopted 18 holes as the standard length for a round of golf. While there is no clear reason why 18 holes became the standard in golf, it is believed to be linked to the evolution of the game itself. As golf courses grew in size and complexity, players needed more holes to provide variety and challenge. Chipping is crucial in golf, and here's why it's so vital. We often hear about hitting greens in regulation, especially when looking at the PGA Tour, where the best golfers in the world compete. These pros, on average, only manage to hit about 12.5 greens during a round. Now, let's say you're a 10-handicap golfer aiming to shoot an 80. This means you'll only be hitting around five greens out of the 18 holes. As a result, you'll find yourself chipping a lot. To maintain lower scores, you need to be skilled at chipping because you're going to face these shots more frequently than you might think. Expecting to hit 15 or 16 greens during a round is unrealistic for most golfers. Even the top players struggle to achieve this unless they have an extraordinary day. Generally, they hit only eight or nine greens, and sometimes they even miss the cut. This underscores the importance of chipping. You must have the ability to chip the ball close to the hole if you want to avoid higher scores.
